Niels Matthias Petersen (24 or October 25th 1791 - May 11th 1862), was a Danish philologist and historian.

It was named, a little against its liking, Professor de Scandinavian Langues within the University of Copenhagen in 1845; it will preserve this station until its death. It was since childhood a friend close to the Danish linguist Rasmus Rask. It will approach several fields in its career of scientist.

Linguistics

Its first great work Det danske, norske og svenske Sprogs Historie under deres Udvikling af Stamsproget' ( history of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish and their evolution since the language commune' ) was published in 1829. In this book, being based on work of Marcus Schnabel and Laurent Hallager, it shows that number of words of the Norwegian dialects are close to the Icelandic and of the Old man-Norwegian.

It took a big part in an orthographical debate where it defended the idea of the development of a Scandinavian language common to the writing.

It publishes an article Om det færøske Sprog ( On the language féringienne ), important article at the same time for the rebuilding of a Norwegian written language but also for the construction of a written language féringienne. This article will count for Ivar Aasen in its work of creation of néo-Norwegian.

History

Its subject of predilection however remains the history, and it contributed in this field by the means of several significant works. He was also the instigator of research in the field of the Toponymie. He also worked, as a Professor d' Université, on the literary history. The work in five volumes which resulted from it was initially considered daring, then accepted like a reference in this field.
