Nicolas Rolin

Nicolas Rolin (1376-1462) is a great political figure of the Burgundy and France of the 15th century. He was chancellor of Philippe the Good, duke of Burgundy during 40 years.

Biography

The political career

Born in 1376 within a middle-class family from Autun, it married Marie of the Moors, marriage which supported its entry in the middle-class of Paris. In 1422, Nicolas Rolin was named chancellor of Philippe the Good, duke of Burgundy. It was very related to Jean without Peur, which was the godfather of its third wire. Widower, it marries in 1421, Guigone Saline resulting from the nobility comtoise.

Its native house became the museum of the town of Autun baptized Musée Rolin.

The patron

The founder of the Old people's homes of Beaune

He is also the founder, with his wife Guigone the Saline ones, Hospices of Beaune, in 1443. He creates in 1452 a new religious order: Sisters of mercy of Beaune. It is him which orders polyptyque last Judgment with the Flemish painter Rogier van der Weyden, for the old people's homes. After having been one of the pillars of the Treated of Arras which put an end to the One hundred year old war, It dies in 1462.

This table was ordered by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of the duke of Burgundy Philippe the Good. Work was placed in a vault rested by the giver in collegial the Notre-Dame of Autun.
