Nicolas Perrenot de Granvelle

Nicolas Perrenot de Granvelle (1484 - 1550) was at the 16th century Chancelier, Minister of Justice, first adviser and right-hand man French of the emperor Charles Quint, Suzerain of the Comté of Burgundy and count de Bourgogne.
He is the father of the cardinal and politician Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle and the builder of the Palais Granvelle with Besancon.

History

Modest family origin

The family Perrenot de Granvelle is resulting from the rural environment of the XVe century of the valley of the Loue in Franche-Comté. She buys her stamping and settles with Ornans as a craftsmen.

1484 birth of Nicolas. Wire of one of the family members Perrenot de Granvelle become notary which sends it to the Université Dole (then capital Comté of Burgundy) in the the Jura to follow studies of lawyer. 1517 birth of his/her oldest son Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle

Lawyer and adviser of the Parliament of the county of Burgundy

1518 he becomes lawyer and is named at the 34 years age adviser to the Parlement of the county of Burgundy (county integrated into the Cercle of Burgundy which is then directed by a Parliament of notable comtois Vassal of the Germanic empire and which profits from a certain autonomy as well as all the others imperial circles of the Germanic empire). The emperor Charles Quint is him even count de Bourgogne by heritage of the title of his large mother the duchess and countess Marie of Burgundy.

Right-hand man of the emperor Charles Quint

1519 Charles Quint is elected Germanique emperor at the 19 years age. Nicolas Perrenot de Granvelle quickly becomes his very near right-hand man, the emperor calls it his “bed of rest”. 1532 it becomes Minister of Justice of Charles Quint at the 48 years age.

1534 - 1547 its statute and its fortune enable him to make build its own palate in main street of Besancon, the sumptuous palate Granvelle which introduces with Besancon the Architecture Rebirth. This palate (become since Museum of the Time of Besancon) becomes the symbol of its extraordinary capacity, success, fortune, personal and family social rise.

Succession of his/her son Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle

It prepares his oldest son Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle with its succession (future Archevêque of the Archidiocèse of Malignant-Brussels, then cardinal near the Pape S (cardinal of Granvelle), diplomatic, Conseiller State of the emperor Charles Quint then of his son the king Philippe II of Spain (it is only Comtois of confidence close to the king), Prime Minister for the Netherlands and viceroy of Naples

He dies in 1550 at the 64 years age

In two generations, the family Perrenot de Granvelle exit of a modest country medium Comtois became most powerful and richest of the area. The Palais Granvelle of Besancon in Franche-Comté is the symbol of their extraordinary success and social rise.
