Nicolas Marie Therese Jolyclerc

Nicolas Marie Therese Jolyclerc is a writer and a Botaniste French, born in 1746 with Lyon and died in 1817.

It enters at fourteen years at the Bénédictin S. Passionné by the Botanique and constrained not to leave the convent (it had made the wall to herborize), it benefits from the library to study there all the works treating of plants.

At the time of the Revolution, benefitting from the secularization of the convents, it leaves the Church and becomes professor of Natural history to Tulle then with Beauvais. It is told that having explained the role of the flowers in the reproduction of the plants to a public of young girls, it causes the ire of the parents who prohibit to him to teach.

He is in particular the author of: Apology for the married priests, or Abuse the celibacy proven to the catholic priests by the Gospel, the reason and the facts (Paris, 1797), Principles of the philosophy of the botanist, or Dictionary interprets and reasoned of the principal precepts and the terms that botany, medicine, physics, chemistry and agriculture devoted to the study… plants (Paris, 1797), universal, or Natural history and methodical Phytologie of the plants… (five volumes, Paris, 1798), Course of mineralogy… (Paris, 1802), reasoned Dictionary and summary of natural history (Paris, 1807).

In addition to a new edition of the Elements of botany of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) in 1797, he is the first translator of the sexual Système of the plants of Carl von Linné (1707-1778) in 1798 (republished in 1810) and of the Cryptogamie always supplements of Linné.
