Nicolas Louis Raoul
Nicolas Louis Raoul , born the March 24th 1788 with Neufchâteau (the Vosges) was a French general.
He followed the example of his father, Brigadier general as of the first years of the French Republic, and entered, at the 14 years age, as gunner, in the 5e regiment of artillery to foot, the May 21st 1802. Admitted with the school of Metz the 1er October 1806, it returned with the shoulder pad to its regiment the June 27th 1809, and joined at once the armed with Germany.
Promoted to the rank of captain in the walk of the large army of Vilnius on Vitebsk the July 28th 1812, it passed the 1er October in artillery to foot of the Guard, was decorated after the Bataille with Dresden the September 14th 1813, and was with all the great battles delivered in Saxony and France, during the two last campaigns.
After the Abdication of Fontainebleau, the Raoul captain was one of the four officers that Napoleon i indicated to accompany it with the isle of Elba, and it accepted this choice like a new reward of its services. The Emperor, with his return, entrusted the April 11th to him 1815, the rank of major in artillery of the old guard and officer of the Legion-D did it' Honor.
After the Battle of Waterloo, where it wounded and had been seriously made captive, the commander Raoul, retained for four months in the prisons of Brussels, obtained finally faculty to return to France; but an ordinance had declared deposed of all their rights the officers come from the isle of Elba with Napoleon; it sent its resignation the December 10th. It went to Naples where called it the count of Saint-Leu (the king Louis Bonaparte), to entrust to him the place of governor of its young person wire (future Napoleon III).
From return in France in 1819, ordering it Raoul passed soon afterwards in the South America and exerted there the use of inspector of artillery and the genious. In 1829 he was general major constitutional which seized Guatemala, and finished the civil war in these regions. It ordered the army corps of the Mexico, when in February 1832, with the news that an ordinance of the September 24th 1830 reinstated it in the army with the rank of lieutenant-colonel, it left the service of the States of the South to turn over to France, where it could however arrive only in the current of 1833.
Employee immediately as sub-manager, it passed with his rank to the 13e regiment, of which it was named colonel the January 30th 1836.
Director with Perpignan in 1837, and colonel of the 6e regiment in 1838, Mr. Raoul, promoted with the rank of Brigadier the July 19th 1845, ordered successively the schools of Fère and Besancon. Since the advent of the French Republic, employed in the 5e, 18e and 6e military divisions, it was created commander of the Legion-D' Honor the October 25th 1848 and was sent Lyon to Paris, in January 1849, to order artillery of the 1re military division.
The Raoul general died almost suddenly in the evening of Wednesday, March 20th 1850. Its funerals took place the 22 with the Cimetière of Montparnasse.
