Nicolas Joel

Nicolas Joel (born the February 7th 1953 in Paris) is a Director and administrator of theater of opera French.

Currently directing of the Theater of Capitole of Toulouse, it is announced to direct the national Opéra of Paris starting from 2009.

Nicolas Joel was born in Paris, where it carried out his studies. In 1973, it is engaged with the Opéra of the Rhine (Strasbourg) as assistant director, function which it exerts until 1978 in Strasbourg, with the festivals of Bayreuth and Salzburg, and with the Opéra of San Francisco. In 1979, it begins its career from director with a production of the Ring for the operas of the Rhine and from Lyon. In 1981, it puts in scene Samson and Dalila with Shirley Verrett and Placido Domingo in San Francisco, then Aïda with Luciano Pavarotti with San Francisco, Chicago and Toronto. It puts in scene a second Ring for the Opera of Wiesbaden, Aïda with the Opéra of Vienna, the human Voice of Poulenc, Ernani and Parsifal with San Francisco, Lohengrin with Copenhagen, Eugene Onéguine , Cavalleria Rusticana and Paillasse with Amsterdam and Gothenburg, Rigoletto and Traviata with Zurich, Salome with Essen, Boris Godounov and Capulet and Montaigu with Bremen, Orphée with Lausanne. It also puts in scene Tosca at Lausanne for the beginnings of Jose van Dam in Scarpia. In 1994, it begins with the Scala from Milan with Rondine , then takes again Romeo and Juliette with the Covent Garden and assembles Carmen to the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires.

In 1995, it assembles Faust to San Francisco, then made its beginnings with the Metropolitan Opera New York in 1996, with a new production of Andrea Chénier (with Luciano Pavarotti in the title role). In 1998, one finds Nicolas Joel with the Opéra of Chicago for the Fishermen of pearls , with the Teatro Real of Madrid for a Ball masked , in Teatro Massimo of Palermo for Aïda and with the Metropolitan Opera for Lucia di Lammermoor . In 1999, it assembles a new production of Manon in Scala of Milan. It also takes again Werther and Samson and Dalila with Los Angeles, Romeo and Juliette in Chicago and Covent Garden of London, and Manon in Teatro Real of Madrid (2000). In 2002, it presents a new production of Rondine to Covent Garden.

On the French scenes, it carries out, inter alia, Romeo and Juliette , Thai Turandot and with Nancy, (begun again with the Op3era Comique of Paris and the Capitole), Gioconda and sicilian Vespers with the Opéra of Montpellier, Damoiselle elected of Debussy and Didon and Enée of Purcell with Jessye Norman with the Opera of Paris, Faust and the world creation of Montségur of Marcel Landowski in Toulouse, Andrea Chénier with the Opera from the Rhine and with the Opera of Lyon. It presents to the Opera of Paris a new production of a Ball masked in Paris in 1992 and Parsifal with Nice in 1994. In 1987, Nicolas Joel is invited by the Choregies d'Orange for the Ghost ship and there goes back for Nabucco (1989 and 1994), Faust (1990), Aïda (1991 and 2001), Carmen (1998), Romeo and Juliette (2002), Otello (2003) and Bohemian the (2005).

Since 1990, Nicolas Joel is director artistic of the Théâtre of Capitole. He carries out there new productions of Falstaff , the Trouvere , Elektra , Eugene Onéguine , then Rigoletto and Romeo and Juliette with Roberto Alagna. For the reopening of the Theater of Capitole in 1996, it presents a new production of Louise of Charpentier and Werther . Among its productions in Toulouse, were particularly noticed the Ring of Wagner, Boris Godounov , the Force of the destiny , Louise , Hamlet (these two last productions were taken again with the Théâtre of Châtelet in Paris), Otello , the Masters Singers of Nuremberg and the Magic Flute . It reopened the Theater of Capitole, after the restoration of the cage of scene, in October 2004, with a new production of Jenůfa .

Among its last engagements, let us quote Carmen in Scala of Milan, Daphné in Staatsoper of Vienna, Romeo and Juliette with Beijing, Aïda in Chicago, sicilian Vespers in Palermo in 2004, Wally with Düsseldorf (April 2005) and Forza LED destino with Zurich. Soon, it will put in scene Aïda in Zurich, Faust with the Opera of Vienna, the Tales of Hoffmann in Madrid (2006) and will take again Rondine in Metropolitan Opera of New York (2008).

Nicolas Joel received twice the Price of dramatic and musical Criticism for his lyric productions, as well as a Victoire of the Music in 1996, in the category “better production lyric” for the Dialogs of the Carmelite nuns . He is Chevalier of the Légion of honor.
