Nicolas Goupil de Laviolette
Nicolas Goupil, sior of Laviolette (1604-1660) is regarded by several as the founder of the town of Three-Rivers. Having included/understood the strategic importance of the site for the draft of the furs, Samuel de Champlain charges it with establishing new extremely which will be used at the same time with the occupation of the territory and the trade. Laviolette drives a boat to the mouth of the Rivière Saint-Maurice, having on board the men (craftsmen and soldiers) and the hardware requirement for the establishment. The July 4th 1634, it puts foot at ground and starts to make build a dwelling. It sets up a wood palisade behind which one builds houses. It orders the fort until April 17th, 1636, after which it is probably turned over to France (at least, its name is not mentioned any more in the documents of the time, not more than the date of its death, but certain sources mention 1660 as being the year of its death).
To Quebec, several streets, places and other places bear the name of the founder of Three-Rivers.
