Nicolas François Conroux
Nicolas François Conroux (February 17th 1770 with Douai (Northern) - November 11th 1813 with St Spirit) was a Général French, baron of Pépinville.
It entered the February 17th 1786 the 6th artillery regiment, where his/her father, Germain Conroux, Chevalier of Saint-Louis, was officer.
It passed as second lieutenant in the 58e regiment of infantry the August 22nd 1792, and lieutenant the September 11th according to.
In 1793 it fought with the Affaire of Arlon with the division ordered by the general Laage, and it took share, in year II, with the Affaire of Kaiserslautern, the Déblocus de Landau, the resumption of the Palatinat by the general Hoche, and with that of Arlon by the Armée with the Moselle.

In this day, its general charged it with going to carry the order of retirement to the 34e half-brigade of infantry and the 14th regiment of dragons, which were going to be encircled by the enemy.
He was also, the 8 messidor year N, with the battles of Fleurus, and at the days of Juliers and Maestricht the 12 vendémiaire and 14 following brumaire.
Named captain of the 116e half-brigade of infantry the 1st floréal, it was employed with the Armée with Sambre-and-Meuse, and became assistance-of-camp of the general Bernadotte the 1st brumaire year IV, and the 14 messidor it passed the the Rhine with the French Army.

The 21 floréal year X, Conroux addressed to the First Consul a request to obtain the command of a regiment of dragons or cavalry. This request contained the following Apostille:
“I connois the adjudant-commander Conroux since year II, and I was pilot, as well with the Armée with Sambre-and-Meuse as to that of Italy, several facts bright which made it distinguish. I ensure that it will dévoûment justify in a particular way confidence of the government, which will find in him talens for the administration D dedicated body and knowledge for the discipline, as well as an absolute dévoûment. J. BERNADOTTE. ”
Following this request, the adjudant-commander Conroux was placed, the 10 vendémiaire year XI, as chief of brigade, with the head of the 17th half-brigade, become 17th regiment of infantry of line to the organization of year XII.
Employed with the Armed with the coasts of the Ocean, under the orders of the marshal Davout, it was created member of the Légion of honor the 19 frimaire year XII, and officer of the same order the 23 meadow following.
It belonged to the 1e division of the 3rd large army corps during the countryside of year XIV in Austria. The 9 brumaire, during walk on Ried and Haag, the 17th regiment of line, ordered by Couroux, strongly took action with a Russian body in the rows of which it put some disorder, which made it possible the French cavalry to carry out a load which supplemented the rout of the Russians. Named Brigadier general the 3 nivôse year XIV, it had a command in this quality with the 7th large army corps the February 23rd 1806, and made the Campagne of Russia.
Passed with the command of a brigade of the division of reserve of the pomegranates Oudinot, the November 9th according to, it took a glorious share with the combat of Ostrołęka, of Dantzig, Heilsberg and with the Bataille of Friedland.
The Emperor named it ordering Legion of honor by decree of the June 22nd 1807, and created it Baron of the Empire the March 19th 1808, under the name of Pépinville .
Employed with the Armed with Germany in 1809, and after being themselves distinguished with the Battle from Wagram the July 6th, it was named Major general the 31 of the same month.
Employed in this quality with the Armed with Antwerp, the August 24th according to, then with that of North the September 26th even year, it accepted the order to go to the Armée with Catalonia the March 26th 1810, from where it went to take the command of the 2nd division of the 9th body of the Armée with Spain.
The July 27th 1811, it replaced the general Levai in the command of the 4th division of infantry and the 3rd division of dragons. The May 31st 1812, the Spanish general Ballesteros passed the Guadalate between Bornos and Arcos, and went on behind position of Bornos, in the intention to surprise there divisions with the orders of the Conroux general.
But the Conroux general, with the head of the 9th light one, 96e of line, a squadron of the 5th hunters with horse and a detachment of the 2nd of the same weapon, collapsed the enemy after him to have taken 600 men, & parts of gun and two flags, and forced it to pass by again Guadalate.
The November 10th 1813, the general Wellington emerged with a body of 30.000 men behind the Montagne of Rhune, and fell on the Conroux division which defended this mountain, fears it Holy-Bores and the Camp of the Saar. After the sharpest resistance, fears it was taken by the enemies. - The troops which occupied the top of Rhune, seeing the main enemy of these cuttings off, feared to be forced in their turn, and, without awaiting order, they gave up their station and went down in the plain; the remainder of the French Army was soon forced to beat a retreat.
The works of second line built behind of Ascain, were removed almost at once by the enemy, and it was by defending them that Conroux fell seriously wounded from a ball in the chest.
Transported in Holy Spirit, close to Bayonne, it died there the following day November 11th 1813.
Its name is engraved on the Triumphal arch of the Star, east coast.
