However, in January 1999, after being themselves marked against the ratification of the Treated of Amsterdam, it is replaced in its functions of secretary to the federations, and starts a bringing together with the Souverainisme, in particular with Charles Pasqua.
The February 3rd 1999 (according to the Official journal), it founds the club Debout the Republic, within RPR, and, for the European elections of the June 13rd 1999, invites to vote for the list “souverainist” led by Charles Pasqua and Philippe de Villiers.
It leaves then RPR, the June 15th, to become in the tread the assistant general secretary of the Rassemblement for France, new formation launched by Charles Pasqua, being more particularly in charge of the federations there.
However, before the rupture between Charles Pasqua and Philippe de Villiers it chooses to resign of the RPF in May 2000.
Follows one period of bringing together with Philippe Séguin (at that time candidate with the succession of Jean Tiberi, mayor of Paris) then, with the autumn 2001, a certain ideological proximity with Jean-Pierre Chevènement, then qualified of “third man” by certain French media, from the point of view of the presidential election of 2002. It even publishes, with this last, in the columns of the Figaro , the October 24th 2001, an opinion column, “the Republic died, lives the Republic! ”.
The victory of the outgoing president, Jacques Chirac, vis-a-vis Jean-Marie Le Pen, the May 5th 2002, sees it returning in the orbit of the presidential majority, which it rejoins without conviction and hardly believing in becoming of this formation. He is re-elected appointed of the Essonne as of the first turn, the June 9th.
He adheres in particular to the Union for a popular movement during his formal creation, and presents himself to the presidency, the November 17th 2002, vis-a-vis Alain Juppe, Rachid Kaci, Brigitte Freytag and Mourad Ghazli. He obtains 14,91% of the votes of the delegates.
Always incarnating a Gaullisme with vocation souverainist and social, it seems from now on given to durably incarnate this current within the majority party within the French parliamentary line. He very early denounces the abandonment of the references gaullist of the new majority party. In May 2004, from the point of view of the future French Referendum on the European constitution, it presents a motion entitled “For another Europe” at the time of a national council of UMP, motion which obtains nearly 20% of the voices. In the tread, he decides for the lists animated by Philippe de Villiers for the European elections of the June 13rd 2004.
He naturally invites to vote not at the time of the referendum of the May 29th 2005, after having launched a “Committee for not with the European constitution”. He is one of holding line to make vote Non with the referendum of the May 29th 2005 on the European constitutional treaty. Always in its line of the republican gaullism, he is opposed to CPE, the Privatization of Gaz de France.

Initially, it reserved the possibility of taking part in “primary ” if a “credible and honest” system of nomination candidate of the presidential majority were set up and if the potential candidates joined there. Since, estimating that such a system is not set up, he affirms that he will be candidate with presidential of 2007 and will not take part in the primary educations of UMP, “presidential not the business of the parties but the meeting between a candidate and the people”.
The January 13rd 2007, it announces its departure of UMP because of its dissension with Nicolas Sarkozy. It sits since on the bench of the independents.
March 16th, 2007, it gives up presenting to the presidential election fault of having been able to gather the 500 signatures of necessary elected officials.
March 31st, 2007, joined together at the house of chemistry in Paris with its partisans, it institutes " Upright République" as a true political party. The base of this party, asserting the defense of a " certain idea of France" Gaulliste and republican, is the " Pact for France" consigning the ideas and the values defended by this new party. New political clout, this party has the role to gather, initially, the whole of the supports of Nicolas Dupont-Aignan for the presidential election. In this direction, the movements Lives the Republic, Cercle Young France, Initiative Gaulliste, Union Gaulliste and Union of French people is associated there. If the party does not give any call to vote for the presidential election, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan affirms with in an individual capacity his support for Nicolas Sarkozy for the second turn.
At the time of the legislative elections, he announces his rallying by the presidential majority, which attracts to him criticisms on behalf of co-signatories of the " Pact for France". “Vigilant Partner”, according to his expression, it supports the majority without in being formally. He remains indeed independent.
Since September 9th, 2007, Debout the Republic is not located any more in the presidential majority but expressed the will to mouvment preserve cordial relationships to the main thing mouvment of the majority. Indeed, because of dissensions with the policy followed by president Nicolas Sarkozy (Treated simplified, tax package, pro-American foreign politics), Nicolas Dupont-Aignan decided to break the last bonds of his movement with UMP. In France-Evening, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan declares: “More than ever France needs a movement gaullist and free. This is why Upright the Republic, even modest with starting, is affirmed today like an independent political party. Formerly party associated with UMP, we do not have any more any financial bond with this party. Many people, who do not seek ministerial cheeses join us, of right-hand side like left. ”
