Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié
Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié , born with Paris the June 16th 1735 where he died the September 15th 1784, is a painter French.
Wire of two engravers, Renee-Elisabeth Marlié (1714-73) and François-Bernard Lépicié (1698-1755), perpetual secretary and historiographer of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié studies engraving with his father before studying, towards 1751, with painting under the direction of Carle van Loo. He obtains, in 1759, the second price of the Prix of Rome but remains in France. In 1764, it is approved by the Royal Academy with the Descent of William the Conqueror in England (today with the Abbaye with the Men). It then paints, in the same vein, the Baptism of Christ (1765), Christ and the small children (1767) and the Conversion of Saül (1767). In 1769, it is received member of the Academy and painter of the king with Achille and the Centaur . It becomes assistant professor in 1770, then professor in 1779. It formed Jean-Baptiste Regnault, Carle Vernet, Henri-Pierre Danloux, Jean-Joseph Taillasson, Jean-Frederic Schall and Nicolas-Antoine Taunay.
Often compared with that of Chardin and Greuze, the painting of Lépicié knew a great vogue at the 18th century. Starting from the Years 1760, while continuing to paint subjects of history, it starts to paint scenes of intimist kind in the Flemish style which point out to Teniers the old man and for the third time Borch. In the last years of its life, it is often withdrawn in the countryside where it paints rustic scenes following a religious crisis which will lead it to modify or to remove some of its contrary works to its new religious sensitivity.
