Nicolas-Antoine Taunay

Nicolas-Antoine Taunay , born the February 11th 1755 with Paris where he died the March 20th 1830, is a painter French.

Biography

Taunay started to study painting in 1768 near Lépicié, then near Brenet and of Casanova. In 1773, he was pupil of David at the School of the Art schools of Paris. For the period of 1784 with 1787, it remained with Rome to be studied thanks to a purse of the Royal Académie of Painting. In 1805, it was chosen, with other painters, to represent the campaigns of Napoleon in Germany.

With the fall of the emperor, Taunay wrote with the queen of Portugal to require its assistance of him: with other companions, it wished to be committed because it did not feel in safety in France where were exerted political persecutions, and he thus embarked with his family for the Brésil like member of the French artistic Mission.

It arrived at Rio de Janeiro in 1816 and became pensioned painter of the Kingdom. It integrated the group of the painters who founded the Imperial Academy of the Art schools or Aiba, and in 1820, was named professor with the Academy with the pulpit of painting of landscapes. The following year, not being able to get along with the Portuguese painter Henrique Jose da Silva who had been placed at the direction of Aiba, it turned over to France.

His/her son Felix-Emile Taunay became professor of painting of landscapes and later director of Aiba, and Adrien Taunay, his/her son junior, accompanied, as draftsman, forwardings of Freycinet and Langsdorff.
