Nicobar islands

The islands Nicobar are a Archipel in the east of the Indian Ocean. They belong to the Indian territory of Andaman and Nicobar. The territory is separate in two districts, Andaman and Nicobar. One reads sometimes that the word Nicobar comes from the Malayan and means " country of nus" people; , which is false since this expression says " tanah orang telanjang " into Malayan. The Indian government formally prohibited with any not-Indian the visit of the islands.

The archipelago of Nicobar includes/understands 22 islands of various sizes, largest being Grande Nicobar. The islands have an total surface area of 1.841 km ² and a population of approximately 42.000 inhabitants (65% of natives of Nicobar and 35% of immigrants of India or Sri-Lanka. Only 12 of the 22 islands are inhabited. More the high summit is the Mont Thullier which culminates to 642 Mr.

Of 1778 with 1785, the islands were Austrian colonies (one of the islands names besides Teresa in homage to the Impératrice Marie Therese) then became British possessions . In 1947, with Indian independence, they were integrated into the Indian Union.

At least 6.000 people residing died there at the time of the Earthquake of December 26th, 2004.

Nicobaris, in their turn divided into 6 groups which speak about the narrowly related languages belonging to the Langues my-Khmer and
Shompen.
