Nickey (Nick) Maxwell Van Exel (born the November 27th 1971 with Kenosha, Wisconsin) is a former professional American player of Basket-ball of the National Basketball Association. Van Exel, leader of left-handed play of 1m85 was famous for its style of spectacular play and its capacity to register the decisive shootings at the end of the match.
At the time of its year senior, Van Exel was leader of Bearcats in terms of points (18,3 by match) and of decisive master keys (4,5 per match). It led the team to the Elite Eight of tournament NCAA. It gained the distinction All-America and was finalist of the Wooden Award as a senior. In only two seasons, he became the recordman of the history of Cincinnati to the number of shootings at registered 3-points (147), tried (411) and with the percentage (35,8%). These records were beaten since.
The career of Van Exel started when it was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the second turn with the 37e row at the time of the Draft NBA 1993. Van Exel and Eddie Jones were the showpieces in the rebuilding of Lakers at the beginning of the Années 1990. Carried out by the spectacular play of Van Exel, the two leaders helped the team to take part in the playoffs 1995 after Lakers missed the playoffs for the first time in 1994. He was member of the All-Rookie Second TEAM . The February 21st 2002, it was transferred by Nuggets in company of Raef LaFrentz, Avery Johnson and Tariq Abdul-Wahad in Dallas Mavericks against Juwan Howard, Donnell Harvey, Tim Hardaway and a first tower of the draft 2002.
In Dallas, Van Exel had a small role, but had a contribution in the creation of points, in particular at 3-points. It carried out 15,5 points per match at the time of the Saison NBA 2002-2003 and nearly 20 points at the time of the playoffs 2003.
Van Exel was transferred the August 18th 2003 to the Golden State Warriors in company of Evan Eschmeyer, Avery Johnson, Popeye Jones and Antoine Rigaudeau against Antawn Jamison, Chris Mills, Danny Fortson and Jiri Welsch. At the time of the Season NBA 2003-2004, it played only 39 meetings, with averages of 12,6 points and 5,3 decisive master keys.
The July 20th 2004, it was transferred by Golden State to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange from Dale Davis and daN Dickau. With the Blazers, it registered 11 points per match in 53 matches.
Portland cement évinça Van Exel the August 3rd 2005, and then signed with the San Antonio Spurs the August 29th. After this signature, Van Exel declared that it would be its last season in NBA.
