Nicholas Rowe
Nicholas Rowe , (1674 with Little Barford, Bedfordshire - 1718 in London), is a Dramaturge and a Poète English. He reached the dignity of Poète Prize winner in 1715.
Work
the ambitious Mother-in-law ( The Ambitious Stepmother ), her first part, saw the day in 1700 and was produced by Thomas Betterton. The action proceeded with Persépolis and the representation accepted very warm welcome. This success was followed of Tamerlan ( Tamerlane ), text in which the large conqueror appears actually Guillaume III of England while Louis XIV is turned in derision under the features of Bajazet.Penitent just the (1703) is an adaptation freely inspired of the fatal Dot of Philip Massinger and Nathaniel Field. Large the critic Samuel Johnson arranged this part among the most pleasant Tragédie S ever written in English. It notes in particular that “ the history is domestic, comparable to the daily life and thus easily appréhendable for imagination; diction is of an exquisite harmony, sometimes soft or sharp according to the occasion ”. The famous character of Lothario remained in the memories like the archetypal incarnation of the man dissolu. One in addition says that the character of Calista would have later inspired in Samuel Johnson that of Clarissa Harlowe, just like Lothario would have given rise to Lovelace.
In 1704, Rowe was tested with the Comédie, by carrying out Mordeur ( The Biter ). It is reported that the part hardly amused that its author, and Rowe went back to the tragedy with a Ulysses ( Ulysses ) in 1706. According to Johnson, the part was dedicated to undergo the fate of all the mythological parts comparable, in the sense that “ we were familiarized too early with the poetic heroes to hope to test pleasure with their revival ”.

the Tragedy of Jane Shore ( The Tragedy off Jane Shore ) was played Théâtre of Drury Lane in 1714, with Anne Oldfield in the main role, and held the front of the scene during nineteen evenings consecutive. It is about the greatest success of Rowe. This last admitted that the part was strongly inspired by the style of Shakespeare, without however arriving to a perfect imitation.
the Tragedy of Lady Jeanne Grey ( The Tragedy off Lady Jane Grey ), which followed in 1715), was a failure, which pushed Rowe to give up the female tragedies.
