Nice ( Nissa or Niça in Niçois), Prefecture of the department of the the Alpes-Maritimes, is the larger fifth Ville of France in terms of population (after Paris, Marseilles, Lyon and Toulouse). It is located in the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure at the south-eastern point of the France, to about thirty kilometers of the border Italy. The city is the heart of a urban Aire of 968.903 inhabitants (2007), and constitutes the center of large the urban Espace Nice-Coast-in Azur.
Extending between sea and mountains, Nice profits from many natural assets. Metropolis of the Riviera, it also has all the equipment of regional capital (statute regularly claimed by its inhabitants): the second Airport of France, second hotel capacity of the countries with in particular various luxury hotels, different districts from businesses, a Opera, a National theater, many museums (it is the city which counts some more in the hexagon after Paris), a university, one of the most important media libraries of France, two Palais of the congresses, several concert halls and an international, the Promenade of the English, known tourist window in the whole world. The city enorgueillit also of a strong local identity, fruit of a tormented history and institutions a long time autonomous.
Its inhabitants is the Niçois and has as a nickname read Caga-Blea because of their taste supposed for the blette (or Poirée), ingredient of the Tourte of blettes.
NOR is the code of Nice according to the Liste of the maritime districts.
Nice just like says Nizza in Italian (more precisely Nizza Marittima to distinguish it from Nizza Monferrato ) in Russian, German and Finnish and " Niza " in Spanish. The panels at the entry of the city are written in French Nice but also in Nissart (Niçois) Nissa (the city being called Nissa Bleated it in Norme mistralienne, Niça Bèla according to its traditional form). The language niçoise is a form of Occitan suitable for the Comté of Nice. There exist two assumptions to explain the origin of the name of the city: most commonly allowed refers to the Greek, in whom Nikaia means that by which arrives the victory (the Latin transcription of the word being Nicæa or Nicaea ); the other theory proposes the language of the Ligurians (Celtic people which lived under these latitudes before the arrival of the Greeks and the Romans) in whom Nis wants to say “source of fresh water”.
Nice is located at the extreme south-east of the continental France, not far from the Italian border (30km), at the edge of the the Mediterranean. It is bordered by the Baie of the Angels, and is surrounded by several raised hills from where one can admire a splendid panorama. The city is located at 960 km of Paris, 230 km of Marseilles and 200 km of Genoa. It is about the more big city of the Riviera, territory extending from Hyères to Menton (this name being sometimes wrongly employed to indicate the whole of the French Mediterranean circumference).
The climate of the city corresponds to the standards of the Mediterranean Climat, but it is sometimes described as subtropical expenses, the generally rare gel being (2 to 3 nights per annum), weak (the annual minimum is located at the neighborhoods from -1 to -2°C) and briefs. Thus the winters are soft and dry, and the hot and very dry summers because the city is protected from the winds coming from North and E the West thanks to the the Alps. It often arrives during all the summer season which it rains only two or three days. Contrary, the autumn is one period subjected to strong rains and storms violent one because of the temperature of the Mediterranean still very hot at this season (20° - 24°). The winter as for him is very lenient with a strong sunning and diurnal average temperatures of 15°C. It is even able to be able to stroll out of short sleeves on the Walk of the English in full month of February. The sunning is also exceptional with more than 300 days of sun per annum. What makes of it the second big city of sunniest France after Toulon.
Nice has an exceptional microclimate, which contributes to its famous world, but makes sometimes hazardous the meterologic forecasts. In summer it is frequent that the weather station of the Aéroport Nice Riviera posts temperatures “fraiches” (ex 27°), while on the hills of Nice-West, or even in Nice-Center and Nice-North, the temperature largely exceeds the 30°. It is to be recalled that this difference in temperature is due directly to the localization of this station Weather-France, on the sea, and with the mouth of the Var subjected to strong winds going down from the valley of the VAr and thus an fresh air of the mountains. For example the 1st August 2006, the station of the airport recorded 37,7°, whereas has Nice-West the maximum temperature was of 42°. That appears as especially by “official” temperatures minimum much colder as they are it downtown. Thus, on January 24th, 2007, the weather station of the airport announced 0.9°C in the morning, whereas downtown the thermometer is hardly descended in lower part from 6°C.
Niçois will say that it snows in Nice the every 15-20 years, this to you is not a legend, since the last strong snowfalls took place into 2005,1986… (In 1986 the snowfalls were so strong that one could ski on the Promenade of the English.) In October it often sometimes happens to have a strong heatwave: The scirocco which brings also nuisances since this wind transports sand Saharien.

Located at the bottom of the Bay of the Angels, perfectly sheltered by an amphitheater of hills, in a narrow mountainous basin supported on the Massive of Mercantour, limited to the west by the valley of the VAr and to the east by the Mount Boron. The first site of Nice was the hill of the Castle, which was entirely militarized by Tristan the bastard one before being destroyed by Louis XIV. Nice developed with the foot of this hill in limiting to the part ranging between the Spangle and the sea, which constitutes today the Old man-Nice with the narrow lanes. Another legendary hill, that of the Castle, which separates the old city from the Port. The various hills obstruct the urban expansion: this one was done either towards North, while following the course of the Spangle, or in the plain of the west until Saint-Laurent-of-VAr.
The city is crossed by two small torrent-like rivers, often dry in summer: the Spangle in the east (34 km), which is born above Coaraze and receives the torrents of Laghet and Saint-Andrew (it receives, also, with height of the bridge of Peille water of the Spangle of Escarène), and the Magnan in the west, much smaller, come from the mountains of Aspremont, which crosses the district of the Madeleine before being thrown in the sea, in the district which bears its name.
The town of Nice is cut out in eight territories which one could confuse with municipal districts, having each one a city hall annex directed by a city council man.
The town of Nice counts more than one forty districts gathered in eight territories.

The agglomeration, defined by INSEE, includes/understands 888.784 inhabitants (fifth of France) and the urban surface adds up 933.080 of them what makes the sixth of France of it.
The city knew a big demographic rise in second half of the XIXe century, period when the population made more than to double, mainly thanks to Italian immigration. At the beginning of the 20th century, this rise intensified with the arrival of populations come from common the close relations (of the County of Nice itself).
After the First World War, the city found a strong increase in population. It is again the immigration which constitutait the essence of this growth. The hotel activity and that of constructions, in full rise in the years 1920, attracted world more and more and thus made it possible Nice to become a town of national importance. In 1921, Nice then became the eleventh town of France, then in 1931, the eighth, before being classified with the sixth rank in 1946.
The population increased then very quickly in the years 1950 with in particular the arrival of sixty thousand people. Thereafter, the city reached its current demographic level thanks to the repatriates of old the French Colonies, in particular of Algérie.

The blazon of the city can be summarized in this sentence: Money to the eagle of mouths, lowered flight, posed on three coupeaux of sinople, driving of a sea of azure heavy shower of money . However there exists an alternative with coupeaux which are elements of mountain, of sand , being black and not sinople which are green. Some think that they acts then of the weapons of the Comté of Nice which would be different thus from those of the city of Nice.
Nice Magasine n°125 going back to October 2007 reports that the oldest blazon niçois truly listed as such is gone back to 1431. This one is affixed on a parchment defining the statutes and privileges granted to Nice by the house of Savoy. It is represented there an eagle, animal female into heraldic, imperial symbol, carrying high the colors of Amédée VII, which raised a scarlet armor and which one called “the red count”.
One century later, in 1576, a manuscript still preserved at the municipal files shows a surmounted eagle of a crown to the antique. Will be then added to the blazon the three mounts, the palms, the sea of azure and finally the currency of the city, " Niceae Civitas" , short cut of " Niceae Civitas Fidelissima" , in other words “the very honest town of Nice”. However, this Savoyard heritage failed well to disappear at a certain time, replaced by an exotic animal.
In 1792, the French Army entered with crash the county of Nice. One year later, the department of the Alps Maritimes is created. Napoleon Bonaparte being with the capacity, the eagle niçoise is erased and the official documents from now on are struck of an effigy of the republic. In 1811, an imperial decree comes to insert the nail: the town of Nice is seen allotting new armorial bearings, a surmounted lion of a sun, framed by an olive-tree and an orange tree, themselves dominated by three bees over red bottom.
This decision was made by Napoleon Bonaparte first in Saint-Cloud, being considered to be inadmissible that the symbol of the eagle, representing the emperor in his person, can reign on the town of Nice. However, the tradition of the eagle niçoise perduré with the wire of time. At the 19th century, the eagle again spreads its wings on the city. Gustav Adolphe Mossa gives him in the years 1960 its contemporary face.
Nowadays, the blazon niçois is posted a little everywhere in the city: on the flags, with the Town hall, the war memorial, in the garden Albert Ier, with the castle or on the Garibaldi place. Its gliding flight until in the entrails of the stage of Ray, where the avoided “Eaglets” of red and black still officiate.
There does not exist today any trace of a blazon niçois former to the dédition in Savoy in 1388. But the fact that the Greeks baptized the city “Nike”, meaning “the Victoire”, personified as of this time by an eagle, lets plane the doubt about the exact origin of the armorial bearings.

The Old man-Nice, from its exiguity, enjoys a natural Ventilation noticed by the modern Urbaniste S. With in particular:

The kitchen niçoise is a kitchen which uses the resources of the County (olive oil, alevins, fruit and vegetables, etc…) but also of more remote regions, in particular from Northern Europe because the ships which came to seek olive oil arrived the holds full with food products. Thus one finds specialities such as the stockfish starting from dried haddock.
The meat comes from the neighbouring valleys such as the sheep of Sisteron or the fish of rocks the such mullets, the anchovy alevins (for the poutine), so much is so that the proverb is known: " the fish are born in the sea and die in the huile" , it will of course have been understood that it is about the olive oil of the hills niçoises.
