Holy Nicaise

A first saint

Nicasius , apostle of the Neustrie, regarded as the archbishop of Rouen, suffered the martyr with Saint Melon. It is celebrated the October 11th. It would be buried with Gasny.

A second saint

Another holy Nicaise was the 11th bishop of Rheims. It is him which founded in its episcopal city a church devoted to the Blessed Virgin, on the vestiges of which the Cathédrale of Rheims rises. Its death is gone back to 407 according to the ones, of 450 according to the others. He would have been massacred by the Vandales in the first case, by the Huns in the second. He belongs to the saints known as Céphalophore S: once the barbarians had cut the head to him, it seizes this one and carried it until the place of its tomb . It is at least what its legend reports, reproduced with the tympanum of the gate of the saints of the cathedral of Rheims. The same day, the barbarians massacred also his sister, Sainte Eutropie, and its deacons Saint Jocond and Saint Florent.

Saint Nicaise is the owner of the town of Rheims. Its name, Nicasius in Latin, is a derivative of the Greek nikê (= victory). Other bishops bore the same name to Die and Rouen.

Festival : the December 14th.
