Niamey is the capital of the Niger located on the river Niger in the extreme west of the country. In 2000, the population is estimated at approximately 800.000 inhabitants. Niamey was made up in urban community since November 24th, 1988, and comprises 5 communes.

History

The Mouray-Kwaratagui district is the historical center of the town of Niamey. The area of Niamey is inhabited for a very long time by voltaic populations as the Gourmantché S. Cependant the founders of the village of Niamey would be Maouris, come from Matankari towards the end of the 19th century. The greatest part of the city is on left bank, with the districts: Anikwara, Banifandou, Banizoumbou, Boukotchi, Quoted Case, Quoted faysal, Dangawo, Daressalam, Second District, Gamkale, Kalley are, southern Kalley, Kwarakano, Kwaratagui, Lakouroussou, Lazare, Liberté, Madina, Plateau, Quartier Airport, Quartier Sonni, Quartier Zabarkane, Saga, Sixième, Talladje, Terminus, Tourakou, Wadata, high Yantala, Yantala Bas, Zongo and Goudel. On the Right Bank, so called Harobanda is the districts: Gaweye, Lamordé, Kennedy Bridge, Kirkissoye, Karadjé, Banga Bana.

Demography

These last years the one annual rate of increase is about 4,8%.

Economy

Niamey shelters the majority of industries of the country. It is also the principal commercial pole of Niger. It is known to have exported during the last five years, approximately 2.000.000 quintals of copper and a similar quantity of gold.

Culture

Niamey shelters the National museum of Niger. Niamey accommodated in December 2005 the fifths Jeux of the Francophonie.

Religion

Niger is a country populated with more than 90% of Moslem, and for this reason Niamey accommodates largest Mosquée country. The city also has a catholic évêché.
