Nišava (district)

The district of Nišava (in Serb Cyrillic Sr Нишавскиокруг) is located at the South-east of the Serbia. In 2002, its population was of: 382461 inhabitants. The administrative center is the town of Niš.

The town of Niš preserves a fortress which counts among most beautiful and best preserved Balkans. In the surroundings, one can also see the Tower of the craniums (Ćele Kula) built by the Turks with the heads of the Serb soldiers overcome with the battles of the mount Čegar in 1809. This battle, carried out Serb side by Stevan Sinđelić, is regarded as decisive in the failure of the first revolt against the Turks.
