Newspaper of Murasaki Shikibu
The Journal of Murasaki Shikibu (, Murasaki Shikibu Nikki ) is a document on the daily life of the lady of court of lépoque Heian Murasaki Shikibu, author of famous the Genji Monogatari (, Dit of Genji). It covers the period active of the autumn 1008, whereas the empress Shôshi is on the point of giving birth, until the festivities of the New year 1010. It interferes very precise descriptions of ritual the following the birth a prince and future emperor, Atsuhira, with more personal reflections on the escape of time when human relations.
Its structure is very particular and leaves think that an important part of the newspaper was lost. The first part relates to the first months of the young Prince, and adopts the ton of the chronicle with very detailed descriptions, enamelled however more personal passages. It is melted then in a second part closer to a letter, where Murasaki Shikibu describes the courtesans that it côtoie and meditates on the environment of the court and the religion. Lastly, the Newspaper shows the ton of the chronicle but to speak about events being produced two years later, in 1010, after the birth of second prince Atsunaga, and finishes without marked end.
