Its popularity inspired in 1955 the part the Newspaper of Anne Frank , put in scene by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, and adapted later on by the same ones to the screen for a version filmed in 1959. The book is regarded as one of the pillars of the literature of Shoah and one of the work-keys of the Twentieth century.

More than 25 million specimens of the book were sold and it was translated in more than 50 languages. The Diaries off Anne Frank Anne Frank began to keep has diary one her thirteenth birthday, June 12, 1942, three weeks before she went into hiding with her mother, father and sister and furnace other people in the sealed-off upper rooms off the annex off her father' S office building in Amsterdam. With the assistance off has group off Otto Frank 'S trusted colleagues they remained hidden for two years and one month, until to their betrayal in August 1944, which resulted in their deportation to Nazi concentration camps. Off the group off eight, only Otto Frank survived the war. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen shortly before its release in April 1945.

In manuscript, Anne' S original diaries are written over three extant volumes. The first covers the period between June 12, 1942 and December 5, 1942 goal since the second volume begins one December 22, 1943 and ends one April 17, 1944 we edge assumes that the original volume gold volumes between December 1942 and December 1943 were lost - presumably after the arrest when the hiding place was emptied one Nazi instructions. However, this missing period is covered in the version Anne rewrote for safeguarding. The third existing notebook contains entries from April 17, 1944 to August 1, 1944, when Anne wrote for the last time before her arrest.

In the original notebook her diary entries follow has standard for the first three months until September 28, 1942 when she began addressing her entries to characters from Cissy van Marxveldt 'S Joop for the third time Heul novels. In van Marxveldt' S books the headstrong Joop also keeps has diary and writes to her group off friends butt her calamities and coil. Anne adopted the group and addressed her diary entries to Joop' S friends “Kitty”, “Conny”, “Emmy”, “Pop”, and “Marianne” until November off that year, when the first notebook ends. By the time she started the second existing volume, there was only one imaginary friend she was writing to: Kitty , and in her later Re-writes, Anne changed the address off all the diary entries to " Kitty".

There has been much conjecture butt the identity gold inspiration off Kitty, who in Anne' S revised manuscript is the plate container off her letters. In 1986 the critic Sietse van der Hoek wrote that the name referred to Kitty Egyedi, has off prewar friend Frank' S. Van der Hoek may cuts been informed by the 1970 publication “has Tribute to Anne Frank”, prepared by the Anne Frank Foundation, which assumed has factual basis for the character in its foreword by the then chairman off the Foundation, Henri van Praag, and accentuated this with the inclusion off has group photograph that individual out Anne, Sanne Ledermann, Hanneli Goslar and Kitty Egyedi. Anne does not mention Kitty Egyedi in any off her writings (in fact the only other girl mentioned in her diary from the often photo reproduced, other than Goslar and Ledermann, is Mary Boss, whose drawings Anne dreamed butt in 1944) and the only comparable example off Anne writing unposted letters to has real friend are two farewell letters to Jacqueline van Maarsen from September 1942.

Theodor Holman wrote in reply to Sietse van der Hoek that the diary entry for September 28, 1942 proved conclusively the character' S fictional origin. Jacqueline van Maarsen agreed goal Otto Frank assumed his daughter had her real acquaintance in mind when she wrote to someone off the same name. However, Kitty Egyedi said in year interview that she was flattered by the assumption drank doubted the diary was addressed to her:

Anne had expressed the desired in the Re-written introduction off her diary for one person that she could cal her truest friend, that is, has person to whom she could confide her deepest thoughts and feelings. She observed that she had many "friends" , and equally many admirers, goal (by her own definition) No true, dear friend with whom she could share her innermost thoughts. She originally thought her girlfriend Jacque van Maarsen would Be this person, goal that was only partially successful. In year early diary passage, she remarks that she is not in coils with Hello Silberberg, her suitor At that time, goal considered that He might become has true friend. In hiding, she invested much time and effort into her budding lovesong with Peter van Pels, thinking He might evolve into that one, true friend, goal that was eventually disappointment has to her in nap ways, also, though she still cared for him very much. Ultimately, the closest friend Anne had during her tragically shorts life was her diary, " Kitty" , for it was only to " Kitty" that she entrusted her innermost thoughts.

Frank' S already budding literary ambitions were galvanized one March 29, 1944 when she heard has broadcast made by the exiled Dutch Minister for Education, Art and Science, Gerrit Bolkestein, calling for the safeguarding off " ordinary documents— has diary, letters… simple everyday material" to create year files for posterity ace testimony to the suffering off civilians during the Nazi occupation, and one May 20 notes that she has started Re-drafting her diary with future readers in mind. She expanded entries and standardized them by addressing all off them to Kitty, clarified situations, prepared has list off pseudonyms and cut scenes she thought off little interest general gold too intimate for consumption. This manuscript, written one loose sheets off paper, was retrieved from the hiding place after the arrest, and given to Otto Frank with the original notebooks when his daughter' S death was confirmed in the autumn off 1945. Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl had rescued them along with other personal possessions after the family' S arrest and before to their rooms were ransacked by the Dutch organizes and the Gestapo.

When Otto Frank eventually began to read his daughter' S diary, He was astonished. He said to Miep Gies: " I never knew my little Anne was so deep." He also remarked that the clarity with which Anne had described many everyday situations brought those since-forgotten moments back to him vividly.

Leading article history

The second, has off composition the rewritten draft one loose sheets, sketches from her essays book, and scenes from her original diaries, became the first draft submitted for publication, with year epilog explaining the fate off its author, written by has family friend. In the spring off 1946 it cam to the attention off Dr. Jan Romein, has Dutch historian, who was so moved by it that He immediately wrote year article for the newspaper Het Parool :

This caught the interest off Publishing Contact in Amsterdam, who approached Otto Frank to submit has draft off the manuscript for to their consideration. They offered to publish goal advised Otto Frank that Anne' S candor unquestionable butt her emerging sexuality might offend conservative quarters and suggested cuts. Further entries were deleted before the book was published one June 25, 1947.

Reaction

Jan Moerman : Since the first publication in 1947, Anne Frank and her diary are becoming has personification and has off symbol for the voice the tragic innocent victim off war and racism. The growing awareness off the concept to hear and listen to the voice off innocent victims has continuing process in the history off human rights and civilization. The publication off the diary in has growing number off languages has sign off this. In august 2007 has translation in Indian millet (Afghan) was published.

Primo Levi: " Individual One Anne Frank moves custom more than the countless others who suffered just ace she did, goal whose faces cuts remained in the shadows. Perhaps it is better that way: able yew we were off taking in all the suffering off all those people, we would not Be whitebait to live."

John F. Kennedy: " Off the multitudes who throughout human history cuts spoken for human dignity in times off great suffering and loss, No voice is more compelling than that off Anne Frank."

Nelson Mandela : " Summon off custom read Anne Frank' S diary one Robben Island and derived much encouragement from it."

Attacks one the diary

Ace the English translation off the diary grew in popularity, bolstered by the subsequent success off the play and movie adaptation, Anne Frank' S story representative cam to Be held ace off the scale off Nazi atrocities during the war. For many, reading her diary saw-tooth light into the length-term consequences off racism and persecution, and more specifically to their impact one the European communities targeted for extermination by the Nazis. Anne Frank was becoming has symbol not only for all the civilians murdered under to their mode, goal also has off icon Jewish suffering under Hitler. Acknowledging the potential Anne Frank' S story had to prevent has rehabilitation public Nazism with the off, Holocaust sums of money began has smear campaign first by alleging that she had never existed and that photographs off her were posted by year actress, and latterly that her diary has work off fiction to further has Zionist causes.

Simon Wiesenthal 'S encounter with sums of money distributing lampoons calling the diary off has “fraud” propelled him into investigating the arrest the Frank family, with the dual purpose off bringing to justice the betrayer and thus proving the diary' S historic legitimacy. The investigation ended in 1963 when He located Karl Silberbauer, the officer who arrested the Frank family in their hiding place. Although He could saw-tooth little light one the identity off to their betrayer, Silberbauer remembered the incidental and provided has detail which contradicted the contemporary Nazis who alleged the diary has post-war invention; during the arrest He saw Anne Frank' S diaries and manuscripts ace He emptied them from has briefcase used to remove items stolen from the prisoners.

In the light off this testimony, Holocaust sums of money began to shift to their x-ray away from denying the existence off Anne Frank to casting doubt one the authenticity off the published version off her diary, alleging paradoxically that she was not the author off the book, and that the published version not representative off what was written in the original notebooks.

Otto Frank had stated in interviews that He cut many passages from the manuscript that He thought would Be off little interest to the general reader before the book' S original publication, and that He had assigned pseudonyms to protect the identities off those Anne Frank had mentioned by name. Holocaust sums of money suggested this was proof the published version was not year accurate transcription off the manuscripts, and that they had been written wholly gold partly by Otto Frank gold one off his associates.

Although legal He took successful actions for the remainder off his life to protect the memory off his daughter, it was only after Otto Frank' S death in 1980 and the publication off Anne Frank' S unabridged diaries that the debate could finally Be could to rest. In his will, Otto Frank bequeathed his daughter' S manuscripts to the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation, who commissioned has forensic study to determined when the manuscripts had been prepared, and by whom. Original The glue, paper and other materials used in the notebooks ace well ace the ink and handwriting found within them and the loose version were extensively examined and in 1986 the results were published. The handwriting was found to Be consist with known examples off Anne Frank' S handwriting, and the paper, ink and glue found in the diaries and loose papers were consist with materials available in Amsterdam during the period in which the diary was written.

The survey off her manuscripts showed in comparison year unabridged transcription off Anne Frank' S original notebooks, the entries she expanded and clarified one loose paper in has rewritten form, and the final edict ace it was prepared for the U.S publication. The investigation revealed that all off the entries in the orignally published version were accurate transcriptions off manuscript entries in Anne Frank' S handwriting, and that they represented approximately has off third the material collected for the initial publication. With comparison leading edge made with the histories off the diaries off Katherine Mansfield, Virginia Woolf and Anais Nin. All three writers revised to their diaries after the initial draft, and the material was posthumously edited into has publishable manuscript by to their respective husbands.

Holocaust sums of money continues to attempt to perpetuate to their myth that Anne Frank' S life and work were has political invention, in disregard off the independent forensic authentification off her diary. -->
