The News-Georgia is the largest island of the Western province of the the Solomon Islands. It borders the Détroit of News-Georgia with the islands of Kolombangara in the west, Vangunu in the east and Rendova in the south. Both plus big cities count approximately 3000 inhabitants: Munda, on the lagoon of Roviana, and Boro, which is 17 kilometers in the north of Munda.

The inhabitants of the island live mainly of the fishing and the Sylviculture. The Tourisme yet is not very developed although News-Georgia is a destination run to practice the Plongée underwater. Thanks to its Airport, Munda is the tourist center of the island, which can be joined in one hour of plane since Honiara.

The territory of News-Georgia still mainly wild and is covered by the wet Tropical forest. The autochtones speak the typical languages about News-Georgia, which represent a sub-group of the Eastern Austronesian languages. These ten languages are divided into Western and Eastern dialects of the province.

During the Campaigns of the Pacific of the Second world war, News-Georgia was occupied starting from 1942 by the Japanese troops which built the airport of Munda there. The island was then made know during the battle of News-Georgia. In July and August 1943, the American soldiers unloaded on the island to fight the Japanese soldiers and to conquer the airport.
