Newcastle upon the Tyne

Newcastle upon the Tyne , often called Newcastle very short, is a city of the Région of England of the North-East in the metropolitan Comté of the Tyne and Wear located on the river the Tyne. It has the statute of city.

The city has a population of approximately: 259000 inhabitants (census 2001), which makes of it the second city of the North-East of England after its neighbor Sunderland. Before 1974, the city was in the Northumberland. Moreover the city belongs to the agglomeration of the Tyneside which is classified like the fifth most populated agglomeration of England.

The “new castle” (“new castle”) which gave its name to the city was founded by the Normand S in 1080. The keep and one of the doors still exist (however separated by a railway).

The city made its great strides thanks to the export of the coal of Northumberland. To the 19th century naval construction and heavy industry also contributed to its prosperity. These three activities declined at the 20th century, the activity is now mainly in the administrations and the retail business. Formerly working poor suburbs remain not far from the downtown area.
