The New wave (literally “new wave”) indicates a Musical genre appeared at the end of the Années 1970 with the musical opening created by the Punk-rock'n'roll . The kind evolves/moves then throughout the Années 1980 with the disappearance of many groups with orée of the years 1990.

The New wave was born from the renewal of creativity of the Rock in 1978-1979 and of the new vogue of the Synthétiseur S (popularized by Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis) and of the limp at rates/rhythms become accessible to the young musicians, the generation post- Punk having digested the influence of major innovative artists such as David Bowie, Brian Eno and Kraftwerk. Musical current with the avant-garde during the Eighties, the New Wave was characterized as being a connected movement and underground thanks to the daring independent labels (Factory for Joy Division/New Order and OMD, Mute for Fad Gadget and Depeche Mode, Fiction* for Cure, ZTT for Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Odd Some for Soft Concealment, 4AD for Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance). This new pop music , of British origin, rejected any bond with the traditional, pure and hard rock'n'roll, Rolling Stones way and especially the variety or the pop one of the time, considering this one too commercial and surface.

In Germany, one speaks about Neue deutsche Welle (“German new wave”, NDW).

In parallel, on the other side of the sleeve, in Belgium and in the North of France develops a scene known as New Wave with all the tendencies which will derive from it (Belgian cf Rock, industrial Musique). Belgian groups like TC Matic, Aroma di Amore, Arbeid adelt, Face 242, Minimal Compact, Tuxedo Moon, The Neon Judgment, Signal August 42 by the means of independent labels of which " Play it again, Sam! " or of the French groups like Trisomy 21, Indo-China, Taxi Girl are particularly active. Their music is strongly relayed in the years 1980 by large the night Belgian clubs, 37°5, Boccacio or Skyline, which will direct thereafter their musical programming towards the New Beat and the Acid-House then the Techno in the Nineties.

The New wave called also wrongly " 80 ' S or the Eighties " knows a revival since 2000 thanks to the new artists resulting from Techno, Electro and the Rock'n'roll like the groups Air, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, The Bravery, Linkin Park or the DJ and musician Moby which by mixing Pop-Rock'n'roll and Electronic music, created a electro-pop particularly effective, with the accrocheuses melodies on synthetic rates/rhythms as percussion as those of Depeche Mode and Cure during the Années 1980.

Main tendencies

One can distinguish two main tendencies:

Tendency Synthpop or Electro-pop

A electro-pop tendency with under-tendencies (" synthé" , " dance" , " néo-romantique" , " alternative" , " héroïque" , " indus") who produces a great number of the tubes of the Années 1980.

One can classify in this tendency Synthpop : Depeche Mode (which is the group emblématique of the Synthpop), The Cure (period post-Pornography), Erasure, Duran Duran, Alphaville, Gary Numan, The Human League, Modern Talking, Tears For Fears, Naked Eyes, Simple Minds, Dead Or Alive, New Musik, Japan, Blancmange, Talking Heads, Talk Talk, Yazoo, B-Movie, New Order (formed by ex- Joy Division after the suicide of the singer Ian Curtis ), Scritti Politti, The Associates, Culture Club ( with Boy George ), Software Concealment, Happy Bronski/The Communards ( with Jimmy Somerville ), Kim Wilde, Laura Branigan, Thompson Twins, Face, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, B-52' S, Eurythmics ( Annie Lennox , Dave Stewart ), Art Off Noise, Yello, Frankie Goes to Hollywood (FGTH), Altered Images, Spandau Ballet, Ultravox, Have-ha, Wham! Post-Punk tendency and Cold Wave

A tendency Post-punk creative which, without being crossed first, assumes the heritage Punk and a certain independence with respect to music industry. Majority of the groups of " vagueness; punk" from 1977 which crossed the years 1980 like " The Stranglers " or " Buzzcocks " can be classified here, their music having in general evolved/moved of disc in disc. This tendency is that where invents a more experimental music, more radical and rebel. It is expressed on scene and nourishes many fanzines and independent labels, in Europe and elsewhere.

It evolves/moves in the Années 1980 worms various directions: the Cold Wave (robot-like and icy alternative of the New Wave with the sound distressing to see oppressive in order to show all it Malayan of this generation in England of then), the Pop modern (born in the years 1960 with Beatles), first steps of the Techno with the ''' EBM ''', the Batcave and what one will call later the Gothic Musique.

Among the most representative groups, post-Punk scene, let us mention the Virgin Prunes, Magazine (with Howard Devoto and John Mc Geoch), Bauhaus, The Damned (first 45 turns " punk" to be born in 1976), Joy Division, The Birthday Party (with Nick Cave and Rowland S. Howard), The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke, The Police (with Sting), XTC, Elvis Costello, Adam and the Ants, Devo (USA/Ohio), Television, Suicide, Echo and the Bunnymen, Cabaret Voltaire who belong to the first generation, then as from the years 1983 - 1984 Dead Edge Dance, Nick Undermines and the Bad Seeds, Cocteau Twins, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Sisters off Mercy, Anne Clark, Front 242 (Belgium), Throbbing Gristle, Monochrome Set, etc Without forgetting the artists solo pertaining to this generation like Kate Bush, Paul Young, Joe Jackson, Billy Idol (after beginnings in the group Generation X ), Howard Jones, John Foxx which had founded Ultravox, Thomas Dolby, Robert Palmer, Nina Hagen, Patrick Cowley, etc

New Wave German, the Neue Deutsche Welle , was particularly productive, with groups like DAF, DER Plan, Andreas Dorau, Spider Murphy Gang and the label AtaTak, Palais Schaumburg, Die Tanzdiele. Plane DER, worthy heirs to Kraftwerk, is dissociated by its oneiric side to see surrealist in its first time, the use of removed from rim synthetizers (of Moog type and analogical), of boxes at rates/rhythms lourdingues, vocoder effects on the voices.
