New York World Building

The New York World Building was a Gratte-ciel of New York. He had been imagined by the architect George Browne Post and had been built in 1890 to shelter the seat of a newspaper now disappeared, the New York World . At that time, it was frequent to see newspapers making build buildings with their name, and in this baited competition, the New York World exceeded all its competitors. Indeed, with a 94 meters height, the building was the most skyscraper in the world between 1890 and 1894, before being exceeded by the Manhattan Life Insurance Building which culminated with 106 meters. However, its size, arrow included/understood were not exceeded that by the Park Row Building builds in 1899. Before the construction of the New York World Building, highest construction in the world was the Home Insurance Building of Chicago which culminated with 42 meters.

The construction of the building lasted fourteen months, between on October 10th 1889 and on December 10th 1890. It was destroyed in 1955 because of the installation of a new approach ramp to the Brooklyn Bridge. There is always a debate at present as for the number of stages which the building had; some advance the number of twenty-six, whereas modern research speaks about a number of stages ranging between sixteen and eighteen.

The New York World Building also bore the name of Pulitzer Building since it is Joseph Pulitzer, founder of the New York World which ordered the skyscraper. The personal office of Pulitzer was located at the second level of the dome, so that the press baron could contemplate all the other buildings neighborhood.

The building was moreover the first construction to exceed the Trinity Church, high 86 meters, which dominated until there the south of Manhattan.
