The New York City Ballet is a company of Ballet dancing and modern Danse founded in 1948 by the choreographers George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein. The company is resulting from an older troop, the Society Ballet which changed name when it became company resident of the New York City Center for Music and Drama. The usual name is City Ballet (or NYCB).

Many dancers belonged to this company: Jacques d' Amboise, Maria Tallchief, Diana Adams, Edward Villella, Melissa Hayden, Jillana, Gelsey Kirkland, Conrad Ludlow, Suzanne Farrel, Allegra Kent, Tanaquil LeClerq, Darci Kistler, Peter Martins (which succeeded Balanchine as artistic director) and Mikhaïl Barychnikov.
