New College (University of Toronto)
New College is one of the constituent colleges of the Université of Toronto, with the Canada. It is one of largest colleges the, accommodating approximately 4.000 students. It is located on Huron Street, in the western part of the historical campus, near the principal buildings of scientific research.
Foundation
Founded in 1962, New College is the first college created within the University of Toronto after the passage to the federal organization. Contrary to the colleges Victoria, Trinity, and St Michael' S, which joined the University as federated entities, New College is constituent member of this one.
The original name of the college was to be “ New King' S College ”, a homage to University College, which bore the name of King' S College before the University receives its royal charter.
Following the example Trinity, St Hilda' S and University, New College draws its name from his/her British cousin, the New College of the Université of Oxford. The system of the colleges of the University of Toronto east copied besides on that of Oxford.
Character
New College gathers since its creation of the students of several faculties: faculty of arts and sciences for 3.500 of them, the remainder coming from faculties of sciences applied and engineering and pharmacy. Innis College, the other college “multi-faculty” of the university, in the beginning was designed to be a new wing of New College, before becoming independent in 1964.
New College is composed of three halls: Wilson Hall, Wetmore Hall, and a new hall named - very by the way - New Building, built in 2003. The rooms are located in the upper floors of the buildings and can lodge to 857 students; on the lower floors are the library, the study hall, the computer rooms, the offices of the admiistration, the classrooms as well as the refectories and spaces of leisures. The new building also lodges the auditorium William Doo and a mini-gymnasium.
New College particularly attracts the students who wish to live near the principal installations of the university, as like the Robarts Library, Sidney Smith Hall (the principal building of the faculty of arts and sciences) or the athletic center.
Wetmore and Wilson Hall, as many constructions of the years 1960, lost much of their architectural attraction, particularly vis-a-vis the buildings of the older colleges or with those built within the framework of the programme of restoration of the buildings. Recently, very new New College Residence Hall gained prices of design for its reason for red brick, a wink with the “ new urbanisme ”.
Life coed
The Council of the students organizes various activities, like evenings cinema, concerts and evenings with topic like the evening casino. Among these events, Mosaic is most known; it is about one evening of music, dance and performances around multiethnic topics. Mosaic is usually held in the auditorium William Doo, like the majority of the other initiatives of the council.
The councils of stage organize various activities for the students who live in the residence: dinners at the restaurant, evenings cinema, left in the open air (drive with the trapezoid, climbing, ninepins…). Each stage also has a tutor ( gift ), a student at the end of studies ( Postgraduate ) who lives with the students and their offer helps and councils.
The life of the residence turns around the cafeteria of the college, which is managed by the Aramark private company. The surface of meal is very large, and several choices are offered to the students with each meal. Meals vegetarians, végétaliens and Halal (but not to hide) are offered on request.
Specialization
The college maintains the particular bonds with the Ingénierie and sciences in general: good number of its first persons in charge came from the Faculty of Science, of which in particular Wilson (resulting from the faculty of engineering) and Ivey (medical college). Today, like much of colleges, it manages a certain number of academic programs; among those, the program of human biology is particularly important for the doctors in formation. New College lodges also a center of assistance for mathematics, the statistics, the economy and finance.
These last years, New College also developed programmes of studies of Zoologie, civilization (South Asia, Africa, the Caribbean), on the women, or a program of Jewish studies.
