New Britain (
New Britain in English, old name:
News-Poméranie ) is the largest island of the Îles Bismarck which belong to the country
Oceania N of
New Guinea-News-Guinea.
Geography
New Britain is located at the west of the Pacific Ocean in the Mer of Solomon. It is between the
New Guinea and the
New Ireland. Having a length of approximately 600 km and a width of 80 km to the maximum, its surface measures 36 520 km ². The island includes/understands two provinces, the
Western New Britain (
West New Britain , capital Kimbe) and the
Eastern New Britain (
East New Britain , capital
Rabaul) which includes also the
islands of the Duke of York.
New Britain is a very mountainous island with volcanic components and karstic. On the island, there are five Volcan S credits and sixteen which are extinguished or door frames.

History

During the years 1884-1914 New Britain had started from a German colony. At the beginning of the First World War, Australian troops occupied all the archipelago.
In 1994 the town of Rabaul and its periphery were almost entirely destroyed by an volcanic eruption of the volcano Rabaul.
