NewYork Times Best Seller list
The NewYork Times Best Seller list , published weekly by The NewYork Times , is a list of Best-seller S of the week. Published in the section Book Review of Sunday, it appears for the first time on April 9th, 1942 under the title of The Best Selling Books, Here and Everywhere .
Contrary to several other lists of best-sellers which, for the majority, are based on the total sales of each book, this one is based on a survey carried out near selected booksellers. The NewYork Times affirms that it is about a list created starting from sales of best-sellers.
The list is presented in two sections: Fiction and Non-fiction , each one containing 15 titles.
There were charges as what certain books were found on this list following a targeted publicity campaign. Being on this list, they received an attention larger than that which was due for them. Certain books written by L. Ron. Hubbard are an obvious example.
Also, some titles are labelled with a cross (†), which means that important quantities were received by the booksellers. Since it is more economic to order in large quantities for the classes or the resale, that can be a tactic to reveal certain titles in this list.
In 2001, a new section appeared to list the books for children. Observers have thought that it was created to decrease the presence of the books of the series Harry Potter , which dominated the classification for two years, which prevented certain titles from appearing on this list.
