New-houses

New-Houses is a common French, located in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle and the area Lorraine. Its inhabitants are called Néodomiens.

Geography

Etymology

To the 14th century, one allots to the city various names like “Nuéville with Pont”, then “Nuefmaisons” and “Neuves Maisons”.

History

The history of Neuves Maisons is quite former to the 14th century. The experts think that the area of the Moselle confluence - Madon, where is Neuves Houses, was first of all inhabited by the Celtes, then by the Gallo-Romans.

The priory Benedictine of Saint-Vincent is founded at the 11th century by a household of Chaligny. “Neuves Maisons”, that one built around, is mentioned starting from 1361. The priory was entrusted to the Jésuites as from 1599, was devastated by the Hungarians in 1635 and the Swedes in 1636. Five lawsuits of sorcery with 17th. Plague as from 1630: 200 inhabitants only in 1716, but 640 as of the end of 18th.

At the XIXe century, the city makes formidable great strides thanks to the industrial revolution. From 130 inhabitants in 1.616, it passes to 2.377 in 1901. In a little less than one century, Neuves Houses had multiplied its number of inhabitants by four. So today the mine of the Iron Valley is not worked any more, the iron and steel plant which marked the history of the city deeply still functions.
