Neuveville

Neuveville is a commune Suisse and the chief town of the District of Neuveville. This city belongs to the the Bernese Jura, the French-speaking part of the Canton of Bern.

Although Neuveville counts only approximately 3.400 inhabitants, this medieval small village enjoys its statute of city thanks to the agreement on the old cities ( Stadtrecht ).

Neuveville is located at the accesses of the Lac of Bienne, and at the foot of the Chasseral.

History

From 1797 to 1815, Neuveville belonged to the France, within the department of Mount-Terrible, then, as from 1800, of the department of the Haut-Rhin, to which the department of Mount-Terrible was attached. By decision of the Congress of Vienna, the territory of old the évêché of Basle was allotted to the Canton of Bern, in 1815.

Policy

Neuveville (in German Neuenstadt) is the seat of the Conseil of the Bernese Jura, first regional Parlement of Suisse. This body is intended to treat certain businesses (in particular related on the culture and the state education) relating to the the Bernese Jura, the French-speaking area of the Canton of Bern. Its 24 members are elected by the population of the Bernese Jura for a four years legislature.
