Neumatique

The Style neumatic is a degree of ornamentation of the Plain-chant, where a syllable is supported by one (or two) Neume of two or three notes.

This style articulates the syllables of the important words by means of neumes of two or three notes, sometimes, sometimes less. The presence of neumes made up is still rare. This style is seldom pure. In the style neumatic there are practically always weak syllables which receive only one simple Punctum, even of the passages partially Psalmodique S (but in this case, the content is generally decorated). Conversely, certain development exceed the framework of the " clearly; one or two neumes" , and precede the style melismatic.

This style meets typically for the Introït (where it is generally very decorated), the Communion S, or the antiennes of the Magnificat in the Antiphonaire.

Example of style neumatic (still partially syllabic): Antienne of the Magnificat (Monday): More decorated example (with melism on the " te") : Gloria AD lib. III:
