Neum is the only seaboard town of Bosnia-Herzégovine. It counts approximately 21 kilometers of coast which constitutes the only access to the Adriatic Sea. The city belongs to the Canton Herzégovine-Neretva of the Fédération of Bosnia and Herzégovine. This access to the sea cuts the Croatian coast on ten kilometers, but the maritime access is longer since the territory includes/understands an isthmus parallel at the coast which gives rise to a bay towards the west, on which is the city.

History and geopolitics

Although incongruous, the presence of this maritime access and its borders, making area of Dubrovnik a Croatian Exclave, are old. The southernmost border (towards Dubrovnik) corresponds to the limits fixed between the Ottoman Empire and the republic of Dubrovnik in 1364. The septentrional limit (towards Split) corresponds to the borders established between the Ottoman Empire and the Venetian possessions of the end of the 17th century. With course of this period, and until 1908, the city consequently formed part of the Ottoman Empire, for which the existence of this terrestrial separation between the Venetian possessions and Dubrovnik was to allow a maritime access, but also the perception of customs duties. At the 19th century, Neum was managed de facto by the Austria-Hungary, this one having from now on the territories of the two old commercial republics.

Although territorialement connected to the remainder of the territory of the Bosnia-Herzégovine, Neum is however an enclave known as " pratique". Indeed, the only road of importance which crosses the city is the Croatian main road traversing the Dalmatian coast. It is thus necessary to cross the border with Croatia and to go up to it near valley to the Neretva to reach Mostar.

Tourism

Neum has various hotels and tourist infrastructures . The prices are there generally lower than those of close Croatia, which in fact a city attended for the trade. The frontier formalities with Croatia are limited in times of peace (indentity card for the citizens of the European Union).

Neum has approximately 5.000 beds for tourism, 1.810 in hotel, the remainder in motels, villas and rooms at the inhabitant. Only the east coast exploited for tourism, the back country being however rich from an archaeological point of view, and having a preserved nature.

The average temperature is of 13 degrees Celsius in January, and 32 degrees Celsius in July and August. The site offers various activities of beach and watery sport.
