In the Greek Mythology, Hypnos (in Greek old Ὕπνος ) is the god of the Sommeil, known at the Romains under the name of Somnus .
Wire of Nyx at night it is also according to Iliade the twin brother of Thanatos, Death (XVI, 671). According to Hésiode ( Théogonie , 759), he lives in the unknown grounds of the West; at Homère ( Iliade , XIV, 230-231), he lives Lemnos. The scholiastes of Homère were questioned on this subject. According to some, the Lemnian ones appreciated much the wine, they thus accommodated Hypnos with pleasure. According to others, Hypnos was in love with Pasithée, one of the Charites, which lived this city. Perhaps finally Hypnos it was honoured in Lemnos.
It can deaden as well the men as the gods. Thus, with song XIV of Iliade , Héra requires of him to deaden Zeus in person, so that Poséidon can help the Greeks in spite of the prohibition of the Master of the Olympe. It calls it “Master of the men and the gods”. Hypnos admits that it can deaden all the gods, even Océan. He also recalls that he already deadened Zeus before, already at the request of Héra, so that this one can make perish Héraclès. Furious, Zeus had tried to throw it top of Olympe, and Hypnos had owed its safety only with his/her mother. On the promise of Héra to give him the hand of Pasithée, Hypnos is let bend. It changes into bird and, once again, deadens Zeus.
Hypnos, on the tombs, designates the Sommeil eternal.
