Neuchâtel Lake

The Neuchâtel Lake (in German: Neuenburgersee ) is, with a surface of 217,8 the km ², largest Lac entirely Suisse.

Geography

Located in Swiss, it is bordered by the cantons of Vaud, Neuchâtel, Bern and Freiburg.

Its principal affluents are the Thielle and the channel of Broye which connects it to the Lac of Morat. Since the Correction of water of the Jura, it is useful, with the Lac of Morat, compensating reservoir for water of the Aar running out in the Lac of Bienne. Indeed, if the level of this last goes up too much, the flow can be stopped to see even going in the opposite direction.

The Neuchâtel Lake makes 38,3 km length and has a maximum width of 8,2 km. Its maximum depth is of 152 m and its capacity is estimated at 14 km ³.

On its bank with the Northern is the Canton of Neuchâtel, to the extreme western the towns of Yverdon-the-Baths and of Grandson, in the center of the bank southern is the commune of Estavayer-the-Lake.

This lake was very appreciated by Rousseau, it compares it with the lake Leman in " Daydreams of the walker solitaire" (1782).

Activities

Many vineyards are present on banks of the lake. One finds there Chasselas and black Pinot with which one makes the rosy one called Oeil-de-perdrix .

Tourism is also important in the area but is especially concentrated in the big cities which border the lake: Yverdon-the-Baths, Neuchâtel, Estavayer-the-Lake
