Neturei Karta
The Neturei Karta (in Araméen: נטוריקרתא; “the guards of the city”) is a group of Jews Haredim (utra-orthodoxe) which reject any form of Sionisme. For this reason, they are opposed actively to the existence of the State of Israel.
Ideology
The Neturei Karta consider that the Jewish State of antiquity was destroyed by the divine will, and that only the Messie will be able to restore it. Any human attempt to recreate a Jewish state before the arrival of the Messiah is thus an attack against the divine will.
At the time of the Israeli elections, they invite in a systematic way thus to refuse to vote.
Very specific to the political plan, the Neturei Karta have little difference with the other ultra-orthodoxe groups. Just like they, they have a design extrèmement strict of the application of the Halakha (the orthodoxe Jewish religious law). It has right summer noted a tendency to interpretations even more strict than the average. The women of the community thus have an education level which remains rather lower than those of the other ultra-orthodoxe groups, or the training of the women appreciably developed in second half of the 20th century.
Theorthodoxe ones are called in Hebrew the Haredim , of the Hebrew word harada , (strong fear, terror). The Neturei Karta , like the others Haredim , “are thus terrified” with the idea to violate the least divine command, of or the general attitudes of extreme prudence (particularly strong at the Neturei Karta ) with respect to any failure. Television or the laic press is thus refused, by fear to see indecent images there.
There exist more or less strict groups haredim . Within the camp haredi , the majority of the tendencies more the most fundamentalist antisionists and are gathered within the Edah Haredit , a rather flexible federation of autonomous fundamentalist groups, equipped in Israel with its own rabbinical courts.
Although having bonds with the Edah , the Neturei Karta are not formally members, and are regarded for it as even more strict and more anti-Zionists.
From a general point of view “even among the haredim the Neturei Karta are regarded as an uncontrolled fringe”.
Creation
The group appeared in 1938, at the time of a scission with respect to the religious party Agoudat Israel , regarded as become too tolerant with respect to the Zionism.
The Neturei Karta were structured mainly around two old communities pre-Zionists of old the Yishouv (Jewish community) of Palestine: a Hungarian group having emigrated in Palestine at the beginning of the 19th century, and a Lithuanian group disciples of the Gaon de Vilna having more tardily emigrated during the 19th century.
Although one can find there today some Hassidim , the Neturei are primarily theorthodoxe one of the religious tendency known as Lithuanian, or Mitnagdim .
Geography
One finds the members of the organization mainly with Jerusalem (in particular in their bastion of Mea Sharim ), with antennas with New York and Beit Chemech, close to Jerusalem. Their number is estimated between 5.000 and less than 1.000 with the beginning of the 21e century.Other bunches, associated with the Neturei Karta but by not forming part officially are with London, Vienna, Antwerp, New York and other parts of the State of New York. There exists also a small community with Montreal, which took part in a demonstration against the invasion of Lebanon in 2006.
Tendencies
In accordance with a tendency attends at the haredim , the Neturei Karta are them-even divided into various tendencies dependant on various rabbis, and their actions do not engage all the organization inevitably.
The tendency considered as most radical, minority, is in 2006 that of the rabbi Moche Hirsch of Jerusalem and the rabbis Yisroel Dovid Weiss and Moche Ber Beck of New York. On several occasions, they adopted positions having caused reserves and oppositions of the direction Neturei Karta .
Thus rabbi Hirsch he was Minister for the Jewish businesses in the government of Yasser Arafat, before requesting from UNO a statute Palestinian refugees. Rabbi Ber Beck met in 2000 Louis Farrakhan, directing Nation off Islam , discussed for his standpoint anti-juives.
But the most criticized action was the support of the radical faction for the standpoint violently anti-Israelis of the Iranian president Ahmadinejad. These soutients will culminate with the conference organized by Ahmadinejad in December 2006 with Teheran denying the reality of the holocaust and criticizing its political use by the Zionists. The direction of the Neturei Karta and that of the Edah Haredit firmly condemned this participation.
The reasons of these bringings together with personalities considered as anti-Israelis voires Antisémite S is connected to the conviction that the Sionisme, as a revolt against the divine will, will be able only to involve increasingly strong divine punishments of the Jewish people (the Shoa being one of them), until the destruction of the State of Israel. It is thus important for most radical, which is also most anxious, preparing the survival of the Jewish people by seeking bringings together with the most hostile groups with Israel or the Juifs. Like the judgment of the direction Neturei Karta following the business of the conference of Teheran shows it, much consider however that all cannot be made in this objective.
