NetBEUI ( ''' Net ''' bios E xtended U ser I nterface ) is a Protocole network non-routable of Lan. In 2005, it is especially used on computers using of old versions of Microsoft Windows.

History

It was developed by IBM, then taken again and was used by Novell, like Microsoft for the series of the Windows NT and Windows for Workgroups. Because it can be employed only on one lan and does not allow to convey packages between networks (what allows, for example, TCP/IP), NetBEUI allowed the realization of networks less vulnerable to the external attacks. It was also famous faster being, because simpler. It was given up little by little, with the profit in particular of IPX/SPX (faster than TCP/IP for the local network game for example).

NetBEUI does not profit today any more from the customer support of Microsoft, even if it is always configurable in the control panel of the operating systems Windows. It is TCP/IP which became the standard on PC.

Use

NetBEUI allows for example users connected to a lan but not having same the Masque of sub-network to exchange files (via the Favorites network of Windows for example)
