Nestor Almendros (October 30th 1930, Barcelona - March 4th 1992, New York) was a Spanish Director of the photography, Membre of the American Society off Cinematographers (ASC).

Wire of teachers. His/her father, Herminio Almendros, introduced in Spain the teaching method of Célestin Freinet. After the Spanish Civil war, Herminio is exiled with Cuba, to flee the Franquisme, where its family will join it in 1948, Nestor is then 18 years old.

Since his youth, Nestor showed a great interest for arts, but especially for the cinema. With Havana, Nestor founds a film club and writing of film criticisms. With Cuba, it obtains a master in Philosophy and Letters then it will study the cinema to New York in the New York City College and finishes its studies with the Central sperimentale with Rome. After the cuban revolution of 1959, it goes back to Cuba to carry out there the documentary ones for the mode castrist. But after having carried out two short films ( Gente in the playa and the tumba fransesca ), he is banished of Cuba and settles with Paris. He meets there François Truffaut and Eric Rohmer for which he will carry out the photography of several films. In 1978, it starts its career in Hollywood where it gains a Oscar of best photography for the Harvests of the sky of Terrence Malick

In its last years, Almendros Co-carried out two documentary on the human rights in Cuba: bad conduct (on the persecution of homosexual) and Nadie escuchaba . It turned several prestigious publicities for Giorgio Armani and Calvin Klein.

In 1992, he dies of the AIDS to New York, with old 61 years

Human Rights Watch gave its name to a decreed reward each year with the HRWI Film Festival.
