Neo-Geo

Neo Geo is a system of arcade and a Console of video game conceived by the Japanese company SNK. The system of arcade, called Multi-Video System (MVS), appeared in first and was declined in family version in October 1990, under the name Advanced Entertainment System (AES).

History

In the beginning, the AES was only in the hotels or in hiring but vis-a-vis success met, SNK finally proposed it with the sale. The version arcade was a historical success in the medium and version AES became worship. Its capacities 2D out-standards and its prohibitive price - in 1990, it was necessary to count 3000 Francs French for the console and approximately 1500-2000 francs for a play - in made an object of phantasm for many players. Neo-Geo was often called “Rolls Royce of the consoles” and targeted obviously a niche market.

The system Neo-Geo (as well in arcade as in console) is that which, with the Atari 2600 (1977 to 1991), was longest exploited (by its original security company) of the history of the video game, exceeding even the Game Boy. Its last play left on October 19th, 2004, although it is always sold in certain retailers, this date marks the end of the era of the 16 bits.

System of arcade/MVS

The system of arcade Neo Geo called MVS (Multi-Video System) consists of a mother chart equipped with 1 to 6 sites for cartridges of play so that the player can select by a button the kind of play which it wishes. According to the models of mother chart, the connector being used for connecting it on a terminal of arcade is with the format JAMMA or jamma+. The possibility of having several plays on the same mother chart allowed better outputs for the owners and an important space saver.

It is even possible to safeguard its part on a memory card and to continue it on the console of living room. This memory card was besides the very first one of the history of the video game, and this idea was largely taken up on the consoles of living room of the generations suivantes.
The only difference between the cartridges of arcade and living room is the length of the connector, which makes them incompatible one with the other. Thus, the owners of arcade could not use the cartridges AES which are much less expensive than versions MVS (Cartouche MVS at present dimensioning between 5 and 100 Euros, Cartouche of living room between 15 and 1000 Euros).

Today still this system has a strong coast near a public collector and/or hardcore-gamer, on the one hand because one does not find any almost more in the rare rooms of arcade in Metropolitan France, on the other hand because its price is exaggerated generally less than its equivalent, the AES.

Comfort living room/AES

The domestic version of Neo Geo is known under the name of AES (Advanced Entertainment System), probably by analogy with the Nintendo Entertainment System which dominated then the market of the consoles 8-bit.

One will also note that certain plays in European version are extremely snuffed collectors, such as for example Metal Slug , Neoturf Master , Ninja Master or Kizuna Encounter and Ultimate 11 . One counts less than 10 known copies of plays such Ultimate 11 and Kizuna Encounter in European version. The price which can, following the general state of the play, to border 5000 to 12000 euros.

SNK declined its console in other models;
Initially to make the console more accessible financially by using the support CD-ROM for the plays:

Then to succeed Neo Geo:
  • Hyper Neo Geo 64 only left in arcade because awaited success did not arrive and the version console was born never.

Two portable consoles also were born:
