Nelspruit is a town of South Africa located in the East of the Transvaal at 330 km of Johannesburg, in the province of the Mpumalanga of which it is the capital.

Located at 619 m of altitude in the valley Crocodile (" Krokodil" in Afrikaans, " Umgwenya" in siswati), the city owes its name to the brothers Gert, Louis and Andries Nels which had bought their farm in there 1890. The president Paul Kruger made of it the last Capitale of the Republic of South Africa of Transvaal after the fall of Pretoria at the time of the Guerre of Boers.

With the development of the railroad starting from 1902, Nelspruit became a great economic center and a tourist crossroads on the road of the Mozambique and with the accesses of the National park Kruger.

Nelspruit counts 110.000 inhabitants today. At the time of the census of 1991, the city counted officially only 21.000 inhabitants but only the white residents were listed. The blacks could not live the city and lived in the autonomous townships or Bantoustan S close relations of Nelspruit.

The area of Nelspruit produces many fruit and vegetables including 1/3 of the national production of orange.

The city and the agglomeration of Nelspruit form part with the cities White River and of Hazyview of the local municipality of Mbombela (local Mbombela Municipality) within the municipal district of Ehlanzeni (Ehlanzeni district municipality).

Mbombela means in Siswati “much of people together in a small space”. It counts 475.000 inhabitants. The municipality ultra-is dominated by ANC although the elected officials of the old white cities of Nelspruit and White River are democratic Alliance (opposition).

The city even of Nelspruit is hardly of interest except its beautiful botanical garden and its avenues bordered of Jacaranda S. It is a crossing point towards the great tourist destinations of the province like the Kruger park, the Blyde River Canyon, the village museum of Barberton or Mozambique and the Swaziland.

Nelspruit, just like White To rivet, could undergo the fate of the cities afrikaner S of the province close to the Limpopo. Indeed, the local authorities of the ANC have the project of éradiquer of provincial toponymy the names afrikaner S or colonialists. The city rested by the Nels brothers in 1890 could thus lose its historical identity soon.

In May 2005, the committee of the geographical names of Mpumalanga rejetté the proposal made by the municipality rename the city with the name d" Emlegeni" for reason for absence of public consultation of the inhabitants of the city.
