Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller , more known under the name of Nelson Rockefeller , (July 8th 1908 - January 26th 1979) is a American Politician , member of the Republican party. He was governor of the State of New York and the 41e vice-president of the United States of the December 18th 1974 with the January 20th 1977, under the presidency of Gerald Ford.

Origins

Born in Maine in 1908, Nelson Rockefeller is a member of the Famille Rockefeller, wire of the billionaire John D. Rockefeller, Jr, and grandson of the oil tycoon John Davison Rockefeller, while his/her maternal grandfather Nelson W. Aldrich was senator of Rhode Island. His/her brother was Winthrop Rockefeller, governor of the Arkansas, and his nephew the governor and senator John Davison Rockefeller, IV, of Virginia-Western. Nelson was the leader of the five Rockefeller brothers, and was graduate of Darmouth College in 1930. His/her son Michael C. Rockefeller is disappeared during a forwarding in New Guinea.

Political career

Nelson Rockefeller took various responsabilities under the presidencies for Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Thus “it fulfills the functions of Coordinator of the Office of the Inter-American Businesses (CIAA, 1940 -44), that of President of the Inter-American Commission (1940-47) and of Under-secretary of State for the Latin America (1944-45).” During the period when it occupied the station of the OCIAA, Nelson Rockefeller was based on its relations in the cultural field in order to allow a policy of promotion of the American northern culture in Latin America. Thus, the MoMA that it had created for his mother, and who had become the principal American museum supporting the Modern art, carried out 19 exposures of contemporary painting American which were shown in a large circuit in Latin America. It thus contributed to fight against the influence Fasciste in the area.

It was also one of the architects of the Conférence of Chapultepec which had like drank to coordinate a continental political co-operation. In company of the Secretary of State Stettinius, Rockefeller was with the head of the American delegation. The United States warned the South American soldiers against an enemy more frightening than the Nazis, the the USSR and the Communisme. The treaty of Chapultepec thus envisaged the possibility of class action suits including the possibility of using the armed force against the aggression of an not-American or hemispherical nation and engaged the signatories in the negotiation of a permanent inter-American treaty of collective security.

After an aside during which it was devoted to various philanthropic activities and the presidency of the MOMA, Rockefeller became assistant with the foreign affairs of President Dwight Eisenhower (1954-55) before finding itself with the head of the Operation Coordinating Board (OCB), committee of the National Security Council (NSC charged, amongst other things, with supervising the secret operations of the CIA. To work with the CIA was not something again for him. After having joined Health, Education and Welfare Secretary, it had been requested to organize a seminar for submission to the CIA on the role of the agency in a different economic world.

In March 1955, it presents in collaboration with Rowland Hughes (Directing of the Budget) a proposal for an establishment of a high level committee ( Planning Coordination Group ) which charged with would be helped to develop plannings of the fields of the secret operations of the CIA.

In 1959, it is elected republican governor of New York and will be re-elected constantly at this station until in 1974.

In 1960, it is presented to presidential but is beaten as of the republican primary educations by the vice-president Richard Nixon.

In 1964, it spends again a fortune to be invested republican candidate with the presidential election of 1964. Given initially favorite to the primary educations on its republican competitors, it is finally outdistanced by the senator of the Arizona, Barry Goldwater. This victory of the Goldwater ultra-conservative over the Rockefeller liberal marks the realignment of the party on more preserving positions.

In 1968, it is presented again to the republican primary educations and is again beaten by Richard Nixon.

In 1974, the vice-president Gerald Ford who replaced Spiro Agnew in the course of mandate succeeds Richard Nixon following the resignation of this one in August 1974. Ford calls upon Rockefeller to occupy the vacant post of vice-président.
For the 1st time of his history, neither the president nor the vice-president in exercise will have been elected by their fellow-citizens.

In 1976, it is Robert Dole and not Rockefeller which is reproduced on the republican ticket in the side of the outgoing president.

Its death

The January 26th 1979 in New York, Rockefeller succumbs to a Heart attack.
