Nelson Goodman (August 7th, 1906 - November 25th, 1998) philosopher and American Logician. He is recognized for his reflections on the problem of induction - in which he developed in the tradition of the cognitive Logique " son" celebrate paradox (i.e., the Paradoxe of Goodman). It is made known also within the framework of the analytical Esthétique of which it is besides one of the fundamental pillars with his colleague Arthur Danto.

Biography

Graduate of Harvard in 1928, it continued there a thesis of philosophy supported in 1941. In parallel, it managed an art gallery in Boston. Its experiment as a merchant of art explains his leaning towards the field of esthetics, where its contribution is recognized better than in logic and analytical philosophy.

He taught at the university of Pennsylvania, during the period 1946-1964, and counted among his students Noam Chomsky and Hilary Putnam. Seeing itself refused the control of the department of philosophy, it left this station and was research assistant in the center of cognitive studies of Harvard of 1962 to 1963; then professor in various universities of 1964 to 1967, before being appointed professor of philosophy in Harvard in 1968 when it cotoya W. Quine in particular. One him must have highly contributed in Langages of art with the esthetic reflection and more precisely, with the system theory symbolic systems - note for this purpose its thesis deviates significantly from theories developed in particular by Ernst Cassirer or Erwin Panofsky. One of its most famous contributions relates to the two types of exemplification: literal or metaphorical. It calls “expression” the metaphorical exemplification.
