Nelly Furtado

Nelly Kim Furtado (born the December 2nd 1978 with Victoria, Canada) is a Chanteuse of pop music, also composer-songwriter. Of Portuguese origin , it also has Canadian nationality .

Biography

Nelly Furtado, was born the December 2nd 1978 with Victoria (capital of the Colombia-British to the Canada) Portuguese parents originating in São Miguel, island of the the Azores. They called it Nelly Kim in reference to the Russian champion of gymnastics Nellie Kim which gained 5 gold medals (3 in 1976 and 2 in 1980) and 1 of money (in 1976) to the Olympic Games.

It has a brother and a sister.

She learned how to play of the Trombone, the Guitare and the Ukulélé at the nine years age and of the Synthétiseur at 11 years. Impassioned music as of its more young age, it knows as of the 4 years age that it wants to become singer. Nelly sang with his/her mother in a Chorale, especially at the time of the national festival of the Portugal.

As of adolescence, it starts to write songs and forms part of a Portuguese brass band then. During this period, she listened to R&B, Hip hop, Alternative rock'n'roll, Alternative hip-hop, Trip hop, Fado, Bossa nova, of the Indian music and the variety. The artists that Nelly liked (and who influenced it) are Jeff Buckley, Caetano Veloso, Amalia Rodrigues, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Cornershop, Mariah Carey, TLC, Mary J. Blige, Digable Planets, Of the Drunk person, Radiohead, Oasis, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Verve, U2, and Beck.

At the time of a visit in Toronto, during the summer, it met Tallis Newkirk, member of the group of Hip hop " Lime pits off Fascination" and contributed to their album Join the Ranks (1996) on the title Waitin' 4 The Streets . After the completion of studies in Douglas Mount Secondary School in 1996, it leaves for Toronto where it finally formed with Newkirk the duet/Nelstar group, in 1997. The experiment brought back it to its influences and allowed him to be more at ease with the writing of its own melodies and rhymes. Although, Like , one of the songs of Nelstar, received a subsidy of VideoFACT for the production of a clip, Nelly estimated that the duet did not represent its personality and did not make it possible him to show its vocal competences. It thus left the group and had in the idea to return to Victoria.

Before leaving, it decides to take part in the Honey Jam , a rather famous contest at the time which proceeds with the nightclub Lee' S Palace. Impressed by his service, the singer Gerald Eaton ( alias Jarvis Church) of the group The Philosopher Kings proposes a collaboration to him which will lead on a demonstration with the participation of Brian West, another member The Philosopher Kings. However, it decided to traverse the Europe and wanted to go to the university to follow courses of writing. Finally, it returned to work with them and signed a contract in 1999 with DreamWorks Records.

Nelly Furtado continued to collaborate with Eaton and West, which have coproduit its album, Whoa, Nelly! , left in October 2000. Success came thanks to individual the I' m Like has Bird , Turn Off The Light , and … One The Radio (Remember The Days) . The album was nominated 4 times at the Grammy Awards in 2002. But it accepted only the price of better female pop vocal performance ( Best Female Pop Vocal Performance ) for I' m Like has Bird , its first individual. Moreover, Nelly accepted a good criticism for its innovating mixture of various kinds and different sounds. The second opus, Folklore , left in November 2003. The title comes from the immigration of his/her parents to the Canada. She says: “When I look at my old albums photographs, I see the images of their very new house, their new car, their first experiments going to the places typically American like Kmart (large surface). When you have it in your blood, in never done you really part that becomes your clean Folklore personal. ” The album also showed various sounds, but with an approach more Rock, an acoustic approach. As it concentrated more on the writing, BBC estimated that it had twice more originality than in its first opus. Furtado allotted the maturity of the album to the fact that it was pregnant during the majority of its recording.

Its title Força (which wants to say courage and force in Portuguese) which is on Folklore is used for the Championnat of Europe of football into 2004 who was held with the Portugal, with Lisbon. She sang it at the time of the finale. However DreamWorks Records is sold with Universal Music at the time of the exit of the album and this is why there was not much promotion. In 2005, it is taken by Geffen Records because DreamWorks Records closes definitively.

Different versions exist according to the countries, Maneater is the first individual one for Europe and Promiscuous (feat. Timbaland) in America. Chris Martin, the leader of the group Coldplay, was to be reproduced on the song All Good Things (Like To An End) , but that was not done, which the singer regrets. She also collaborated with Juanes on the song Te Busque of which there exists also a version in Spanish. She had already made a duet with him on the piece Fotografía of the album Día Normal of the singer Colombia N.

Nelly Furtado will make a world tour in 2007, from February 16th to March 13rd in Europe (whose on February 24th with the Olympia), from March 23rd to April 6th in Canada, other dates are awaited soon in particular for the United States, Australia and South America.

Nelly gained the price of the international revelation to the NRJ Music Awards, in Cannes on January 20th, 2007 when it was present for a live performance of Promiscuous .

In February 2007, it appears in an episode of the series CSI: NY ( the experts in French.)

The music of Furtado is also influenced by its place of residence, Toronto, which is for it the most multicultural city of the whole world and the place where it can have access to all the cultures . Furtado did not await the appearance of Internet to include/understand the world of the music, it started to listen to music at the five years age and still continues to discover new kinds.

I always knew that there were new musical genres to discover. For me, it is like a metaphor of the life. I think that if you can go yourselves towards any style of music, you can go towards no matter whom. That is amusing for me, because I get for my fans various feelings and they return it to me in their turn by opening their spirits. I am open.
