Negotin

Negotin , in Serb Cyrillic Неготин, is a city and a municipality of Serbia located in the district of Bor. Negotin is the legal and cultural center district. In 2002, the city counted 17.762 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is center 43.551.

The town of Negotin seems mentioned for the first time in 1530. Its name would come from the Celtic words " neges" and " tin" (“the fortress of the war”).

At the beginning of the 18th century the Austrians made city a fortified town. After one short period of Turkish occupation , Negotin was released in 1804 by the rebels of Hajduk Veljko Petrović during the First revolt Serb against the Turks. A monument in the honor of Hajduk Veljko commemorates this release.

In 1813, the Turks crushed the revolt. And Hajduk Veljko was killed during the seat of the city. The city was definitively released only under the reign of the prince Miloš Obrenović.

Today the city is the seat of the Prahovo chemical plant.

The city saw being born Stevan Mokranjac, one of the most famous musicians of Serbia, and Đorđe Stanojević, which was a physicist and a famous astronomer.
