Neeroeteren

Neeroeteren is an old commune of Belgium located in Flemish Région, in the province of Limbourg. It belongs to Maaseik. Just like Opoeteren, it owes its name with the brook which traverses two communes, in particular the Oeter .

Neeroeteren counts approximately 10.000 inhabitants. This commune is at the border of the country of the Meuse (in Dutch Maasland ) and the plate campinois ( Kempens Plateau ).

Neeroeteren has some hamlets, namely Voorshoven, Berg, Waterloos and of Hei .

In 952, this commune is mentioned for the first time under the name of Uoatra . During centuries, Neeroeteren was controlled by the abbey of Thorn (Netherlands), which was under the supervision of the Prince-bishop of Liege. In 1800, the French occupation put an end to this reign.

At the 18th century, the area was terrorized by bands, known under the name of bokkerijders or chévraliers . The baillif Jan Clerx continued these bands of an iron hand.

Neeroeteren forms also part of the work of Georges Simenon, in particular in the House of the channel .
