Nectariniidae

The family of the nectariniidés (or Nectariniidae ) belongs to the class of the Oiseau X and to the order of the Passériformes. She includes/understands 126 to 171 species of Souimanga S, Arachnothère S and, according to classifications, the Dicée S.

Their geographical répartion goes from the Ethiopian zone and to the south of the zone Paléarctique, to the Eastern zone and to the Australasian zone .

Systematic position

In the classification of Richard Howard and Alick Moore, it includes/understands the 115 species of souïmangas divided into 4 kinds and the 11 species of arachnothères.

The 2 species of Promérops were formerly classified in this family.

In the classification of Charles Sibley and Burt Monroe (1993), the dicées are integrated into nectariniidés which then reach 8 kinds and 171 species.

Etymology

The name of this family comes from the kind Nectarinia which draws its name from the food mode of these birds, the nectar of the flowers. The name “souïmanga” is of Malagasy origin. It can be written without dieresis, with or without indent. The English name “ sunbird ” means “bird sun” because the males have metal reflections in their splendid plumage.

The name of the arachnothères (or arachnotères) is the Francization of the name of kind Arachnothera , killer or hunter of spiders which translates English “ spiderhunter ”.
