The teams of Cornhuskers take part in the university competitions organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Nebraska belongs to division Big 12 Conference where it takes part in 14 disciplines.

The most famous team of Cornhuskers is that of American football, created in 1890, which was national champion in 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995 and 1997. Moreover, Johnny Rodgers (1972), Mike Rozier (1983) and Eric Crouch (2001) was honoured by a Heisman Trophy.
