Geography

Nebbio corresponds to old the Diocèse of Saint-Florent. It currently covers the Canton of Conca-in Oro, part of the Canton of Haut-Nebbio and the west of the Canton of Sagro-di-Santa-Giulia, in the south of the Corsica Cape. The communes of Nebbio are the following ones: Barbaggio, Canary, Farinole, Murato, Nonza, Ogliastro, Olcani, Oletta, Olmeta-of-Cape, Olmeta-di-Tuda, Patrimonio, Piève, Poggio-with Oletta, Rapale, Rutali, Saint-Florent, San-Gavino-di-Tenda, Santo-Pietro-di-Tenda (of which the village of Casta), Sorio, and Vallecalle.

Nebbio is delimited by a mountainous peak extended since the dorsal capcorsine to the solid mass of Tenda. It includes/understands:

The central part of Nebbio is occupied by the plain of the Conca d' Oro . The north-western area, the Deserted of Agriates, is presented in the form of a series of valleys now sterile, between low watersheds. Agriates are dominated by Assembles Genova (418 m).

Two rivers bathe Nebbio:

History

Prehistory

Antiquity

The first ancient contacts with external civilizations were made, in Nebbio, by a weak trade with the Mediterranean navigators who were the Phénicien S (importers of the Pin of Alep in the area), the Greek , the Étrusques and the Carthaginois. The autochtones preserved a life inherited the age of iron.

When they invaded Corsica in 260 av. J. - C., the Romain S had mesh to leave with the population Nebbio, that they named the Nebolenses . Among the many battles, the legend retained that said " field of the myrtes" , close to Mortella, in Agriates: the troops of the Centurion Caius Papirius inflicted a heavy loss with the " Korsi". The discovery of tombs and Roman weapons seems to corroborate the tradition.

More than one century afterwards, the pax romana had been essential in Corsica and Nebbio seems to have belonged to the colony of Mariana (in the south of Bastia). The cities or ancient villages of the area seem to have been the following:

  • Lourinon (or Turrinon), name quoted by Ptolémée: the city, probably located close to the current church Saint Michel of Murato, was to constitute the capital of indigenous to the II E;
  • Cersunum: close to the site of the current cathedral of Saint-Florent, and who took the name of Nebbiu;
  • Civitas Canelata : site of the current village of Canary;
  • Nuntia: ancient site of current Nonza.
Nebbiu was the object of fortuitous archaeological excavations at the 16th century: the visible remainders of this city were announced by Giustiniani, then the chronicler Ceccaldi described the discovery, in 1553, of a Nécropole consisted of filled up vases of bones, under the site of construction of the Citadelle.

The countryside of the plain was the object of an important farm. On these fields were built besides large villae which one finds the ruins today (therme S of Curone with Olmeta-di-Tuda, tombs of Vallecalle, etc).

At the time of the Christianization of the island, Nebbio was constituted in diocese, and the construction of vaults predisposed with the future administrative cutting in pièves. The Vandales, when they invaded Corsica, imported the Arianisme and were undoubtedly the authors of the martyr of both Saint S buildings. Saint Florent one of the 46 bishop S of Africa would be exiled by the Synode of Carthage towards Corsica. With its death in Nebbio, it will give its name to the future city built in Conca d' Oro. Sainte Julie was a young Carthaginian which refused to abjure its Christian faith , at the time of an unloading with Nonza, during a pagan festival . She died crucifiée after multiple tortures of which the section of the centres.
