History

Ndjamena was based by Emile Gentil on May 29th, 1900 on the site of a small village kotoko under the name of Extremely-Lamy , in remembering earlier the commander François Joseph Amédée Lamy, deceased with the battle of Kousseri a few days. November 6th, 1973, the president François Tombalbaye re-elects it Ndjamena, of the name of a nearby Arab village (Am Djamena, meaning the place where one rests).

The city underwent heavy destruction in 1979 and especially in 1980 at the time of the civil war. A good part of the population of southernmost origin then left the city.
