Navy Island was proposed to be the new world Capital of Peace, and to accommodate the district-general of the the United Nations, by an international committee in 1945 and 1946. The island was regarded as an ideal site since it was at the border between two peaceful countries. It was proposed that Navy Island is yielded to the the United Nations, as long as the general headquarter would be located there. Finally the proposal was disallowed in favor of the current site of the Siège of the United Nations to New York City.
