Biography

Theodore Fats Navarro learns the Piano and the Saxophone tenor before choosing the Trompette. He makes his professional beginnings with the 17 years age. From 1943 to 1944, it belongs to the orchestra of Andy Kirk. From 1945 to 1946, he is member of the Big band of Billy Eckstine.

From 1946 to 1950, he is a much in demand musician. One can hear it with the “Kenny Clarke' S Be Bop Boys”, “Eddie Davis And His Reboppers”, in the trainings of musicians like Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon or Illinois Jacquet and, briefly, in the Big band of Lionel Hampton (spring 1948) and the sextet of Benny Goodman (September 1948).

By three times, it is voted by plebiscite by the readers of the review “Metronome” and is brought to record with the “Metronome All Stars” (at the sides of Charlie Parker and other “stars” of the Bebop). It also occurs with Parker on other occasions (at the time of concerts of JATP in 1949, in the “Birdland” in 1950,…). One can also hear it, in 1949, in the training of the pianist Bud Powell (with Sony Rollins with the tenor).

The most significant beaches of Navarro Conceited people are probably those recorded with Tadd Dameron, sometimes under the name of the trumpet player, but generally under that of the pianist.

Suffering since years from tuberculosis, he dies, in 1950, at the 26 years age.
